Hey guys,
I sold my monitors recently & have started saving up for Dynaudio BM5A's..
Today i found a good price for the passive version of BM5 around 520 euros for a pair..That is around 330 euros cheaper than the active version..
So i'm wondering am i better off investing this 330 euros on a nice amp or should i just stick with the active version? Thanks for the help!

if you ask me, i would go with the passive and buy a good amp for them (good amp=1500$ MIN), but if you dont have extra $$$ for a good amp so go with the active ones.

Shit i had no idea amps were so expensive..I was looking at samson servo's which were quite reasonable but i guess they're not so good..So i guess i'll be patient & save for the actives i guess..Thanks..

active is better for many reasons
1- less cables less noise
2- built in amps are a perfect match for the speakers
3- less space required
4- less heat and power consumption
5- better sound
6- less possibilities to damage the speakers in high volumes
i have the bm5a and they are great for the money!

Active because then you don't have to worry about whether your amp is up to the task.

i use BM5p with Phonic 250 amp, and it sounds great; and my mixes improved dramatically compared to my previous work on M-audio BX8's.
Havent compared with the BM5a sound, but am happy with my passives either way...

IMO there is no difference between active and passive as long as you buy a decent amplifier.
Voltage is voltage , and as long as the amplifier doesnt twist / distort the voltage waves , the input voltage @ passive monitors is the same as the input voltage @ active .
Plus , the difference in the price between the two is because each speaker has its own amplifier ...

Being passive is not the reason.
That's because the BX8 are one of the worsest monitors I have ever heard.

active, why?
in passive monitors you have 1 amp for each side inside the amplifier, so 1 amp for bass, mids an tweeters, and the monitor splits them up between the drivers... Active monitors have a seperate amp for each driver (one for the bass, one for the mid and one for the tweeter), so the signal is split up in bass-mid-high before it goes to the amp... REsult: better sound quality.
Also there's the fact that the amps inside actoive monitors are built specifically and only for that monitor, so will use the quality of the monitor to it's fullest and is tested in labs at the manufacturers. With passive monitors the amp-monitor relation is not as perfectly balanced... Even if they both are from the same manufacturer.
Active all the way... |
