Using ADAM S2.5A's and definately worth the money. Did a lot of listening before I chose the ADAM's and nothing I else came close in detail and warmth.
Still takes good room acoustics to do them justice, room full of Auralex foam and I can really hear them.
Fostex and Yamaha sound best to me in the cheeper ranges... I consistantly hear good mixes from both and work in a music store have done much comparison.
A really good sound card will do good monitors justice..RME and Mytek for me.
It's a hard life working full time to support a studio. Hopefuly it will pay me back some day! |

Since i've posted this i've read a lot of bad talk about the Event TR 5: It lacks bottom-end!!!
Also, i've read a lot of input from users of Behringher truths: some say their monitors rock, others keep complaining they stoped working
Also, the Adams: They use bass-reflex systems wich i've been warned not to choose because it resonantes on a certain frequency, giving the illusion of a BIG FAT BASS that isn't there!
After all this, i ended up with Alesis M1 MK2 wich sound nice!

SHAMIL. how low those ESI nEar05 can go? they are telling on that page the freq. range is 33Hz-20kHz. 33Hz for that prize seems kinda impossible to me :]
hm i checked the ESI site and there they are telling that is 60Hz to 20kHz.
btw anyone know some online shop that ships stuff (music gear...) to EU and doesnt charge a loads of money for shipping it?
i checked zzounds.com & sweetwater.com. they have good prizes on gear, twice as cheaper than here, but they ship only to US and with some restrictions. |

as far as monitors go..this is what i have come up with to date....
MONITORS ARE SUBJECTIVE
some monitors are better for some people and others better for other people so in the end its a matter of choice....there are lots of good makes of monitors out there that are really good and decent, so the best advice is dont go by brand names(even tho their are some names i would rather buy over others...) but use your ears...listen to many different types of monitors with a really good reference wave..i.e get somthing that you know sounds good and play it back on a variety of different monitors.
other things to note, is you can have brilliant monitors but if their placement is shit, you are still gona have a shit sound and stereo image, so having great monitors is only half the job done...
so best advice....go by your ears. |

Hi Guys
IMO, it is worth waiting until you have the cash to get something decent, as you will be living with them for a long time - buying an intermediate system is possibly more expensive in the long run, as you will want to upgrade again for sure when your ears evolve.
Of course monitors are to some extent a personal thing, but here's a couple of suggestions from someone who has heard and/or mixed records on the following:
Mackie HR824's - my top recommendation.
You just cannot go wrong with these especially for Trance. Buy these and stick with them. If there is a problem with your mixes using these in a decently treated room, the problem is your mixing. Not your monitoring.
Mackie HR624s if you don't need the extra volume and looow bass extension of the 824's (which you do really...) They are less powerful and cheaper. You can add a sub later.
Genelec 1029s - pin sharp, Definitely need the matching sub though.
You can a pick up a pair or these second hand for around 300- 350 quid (uk pounds) now that the new Genlec 8030s have replaced them. Pretty much an industry standard. The 8030's are also very nice...but again, you need the sub for dance music.
Event 20/20 BAS Lots of monitor and power for the cash.
If you have money to burn - check out the Dynaudio BM6A.
Having said that if you do go wish/need to go via a budget intermediate stage, check out:
1. Behringer Truth B2031A
2. Event TR8's (Not TR5s)
Haven't heard these last two, but have heard that they are very good for the price.

Cheers and good luck,

P.s
giving your mixing room even some basic (and cheap) acoustic treatment, makes a massive difference, sometimes bigger than new monitors!

Yeah unless your room is 20 x 20 or larger, the acoustic treatment is probably going to matter more than which monitors you buy. Mine's 19' wide (large for a project studio) and I got modes and reflections all over the place. Only reason I haven't treated it yet is because a) the room is big enough that they are minimal, b) I'm lazy and c) I know all the modes. The 150Hz mode is really starting to piss me off though, so I am going to treat my studio to some serious bass traps in the next month or two.
If you're working out of a closet tho, man, treat that room ASAP. If you crank monitors in an untreated room, assuming the bass modes don't throw you off, the reflected sound makes the rest of the mix above 300Hz a total lie too. |
