Honestly, modular synthesizers make it a lot easier to NOT fall into the traps of presets and kitsch sounds. Takes a lot of work to get a modular to sound predicatble and to retain that level of control.

So, I have been researching into modular systems as well since I have a bonus coming my way, hehehe...
Anyways, it seems the most sensible thing to do is start by getting some Doepfer and built on that in the wild and varied world of Eurorack, however while doing my research I found 5U systems much more appealing for reasons that are completely illogical and I cannot completely comprehend (mostly they look cooler and are bigger, and I heard some sound examples from synthesizers.com in particular that sounded cooler than any Euro sounds I heard).
So I ask you, the experts: Is it really stupid to get going in 5U, or is it a viable option, particularly because modulars are an emotional and illogical endeavour in the first place and it just "feels" better to me.
Thanks for your advice!

5U is a great modular system and if it allows you to "feel" more comfortable, that than is the one for you. Personally I think Euro/3U sounds just as good as 4U and 5U. The sound quality comes down to the user and proper recording technique more than the system.
The best advice I can give you about getting into modulars would be to really think about what you want to accomplish with it. Do you want to create weird bizarro noises/sounds first or do you want an expandable synth that is closer to traditional synthesis. You can do both for sure but their are basic elements needed to go the more traditional route. With the noise/sound route you can just jump right in and explore. Modulars can become an endless money pit unless you have goal.

Wow, that some sick-sounding waveforms...but they don`t make it anymore due to missing parts, apparently...
Anyways, I guess what you are saying is go with Eurorack cause its much more versatile and much cooler stuff available?

There's going to be more AFG's from what I understand, 2nd quarter of 2012.
3U stuff has the option of cheap modules (as well as very expensive) and there are a lot of companies going down that road....Doepfer alone has like 120 modules available for the Eurorack format...And there are new companies jumping out with great modules (Pittsburg, Livewire, Expert Sleepers....etc).
Don't get me wrong MOTM/Modcan...etc modules have their sound and a great sound it is. Its just going to cost you more both in terms of modules and in terms of frames.
Peace out.

Thanks for the advice guys! Ill mull over it some more, but I really find myself drawn towards the MU thing. And I dont want to make just weird noises, I want to use it as a real musical instrument, and most of all I wanna have fun and "touch things".
I only recently discovered how much fun it is to work with real hardware instead of just pushing the mouse around, and I guess thats why I am more drewan towards MU, because it just looks and feels more solid...
