I think there was the quadraSID(?) that my mate Vigi was using in the UK back when we woz making breakbeat...there was a software version of the C64 chip that apparently sounded identical.
Having a sequencer to build patterns is a big + as well.

Mode Machines need to release a bunch of Roland kits...TR 909/808, sh-101...etc.
