so, as a matter of curiosity, has anyone here dragged a PA or anything out into the woods and mixed a track as it plays on a big rig??

seems like a fun thing to do on the weekend, and i'm curious as to results....

We have workshops at our festivals, so I've tweaked a track on a chill stage sized rig before. It's fun to hear all the changes on a big system, but doesn't really benefit anything, it was more so that everyone could hear what was going on.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

no but i often listen from just outside the studio room (with the door open, half closed, closed).
it's a really good way of hearing whether all the main elements in the mix are balanced.

As long as you dont have lots of trees around for bounce back it should be optimal.
The full party sound is not the best idea though... you really would want to still use the studio monitors but it is always nice to be able to hear a track through a full sound sysytem b4 you play it at a show.           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

this is actually a popular and well-known trick which most of cool hollywood sound editors do, as what Bobby Owsinksi states in his book

Wouldn't a generator bother you too much?

Mixing several hours on a PA would end on blooding ears + head blast..

I think the best is to mix in the studio.
Then listen on headphones, portable mp3 player or cheap 4w rms speakers, car... etc.
After this, test the track on a PA.

If you never heard a track of yours on a big system, you should drag the PA into the woods!
I think every new producer should do a PA test. It gives a all new perspective on your sound.
You can ear the flaws more easily!

But do not mix the entire track on it, like the arrangements and stuff!
Do only the overall leveling..
