Hi i wonder how you set the volume balance
while mixing? What do you listen to and focus on?
Should some instrument stand out more or should they be heard with the same volume within the mix?

Thanx for any help!

it depends on what you are creating, what you want to achieve. there are tons of great threads on mixing here - f.e. mixing ambient music is four or five topics below - do your research mate and good luck

I start with kick peaking around -10d dbfs. later when u add elements try to avoid changing level of the kick while adjusting everything else to it. if you mix pop or rock, instead of the kick the leading element might be vocal, guitar or any other instrument which plays solo.

I listen to what I mix (yeah) and try to focus on the whole thing - analyzing relative volumes and space position of the elements in the mix.

Well, that is the creative part. if you mix psytrance, i would say no, everything should be in balance.

Anyways, ear is the judge. Train ear the ear! Room treatment helps. And use headphones to check what u mix.

Thanx for your reply seems that there´s many different mixing techniques when your setting the volume for your instruments. Makus yes i believe your right, it seems that you can decide to fokus on a certain instrument in a track and set the volume on the other instrument to it!
Regading the levels in psy trance im not sure yet, is the kick set with the loudest volume with the other instrument build around it or should all the instruments be heard with equal levels?

Makus have said some good tips.
It really helps to set the kick at a fixed number. In that way you have some benchmark in all tracks you do to "set up" the mix.

If you work with samples (any sample) i recommend you to tune them to the key(or some other working key), it sound a lot better when all is tuned .

People probably mix pretty differently, but for me, i mix meanwhile i create the tune, little here and there. That way you dont have to do a FAT mixdown, just some final touches.

Reference speakers/headphones is very useful.
Check your mix at as many places as you can.

Also i recommend you to use db meters, it´s very useful.          .

I do it kinda like Makus says, and when I am almost done I up Kick and bass significantly, works for me... in other words, it really depends on how you mix Conny, try to find your own workflow!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

The art is to look at it, how the listener will experience it. Thaz not that easy sometimes.. it's a little bit like panning.. they have also small rules for that.          https://soundcloud.com/twonzero-progressive/twonezero-alienpast-soon-on

yes exactly, that helps a lot. even when i send a new track to a friend who lives in a different city / country and we play the track together helps listen to your track a lil bit from a different perspective (not gay). not sure how it works - mind is fucking difficult.

Drop the mind, just listen and witness the track, as a bystander, if it hits you as good then chances are that it is...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I normally mix to my kick and bass then adjust everything to those but you can also use automation for different sections of the track and have several different mixes - but watch those levels           Check out my site for Video tutorials and other tips & Tricks

I like to mix to get the peak at where i want it to be at compared to "industry standart" tracks or just come up with a sound of my own or whatever. but the peak of all elements should be where i want them to be. If i want to peak at 0db then i make the balance between the tracks to be where i like it or as someone else did that i liked . will i want the bass leading or the snare leading or the kick leading and which part of those instruments would be leading. it all comes more and more with experience more then numbers so for starters any number is good. Listen to tracks and music you like and try to listen to those parts its the finished product. Doesnt matter if its mastered a really good mix should be better then the mastered. Listen to reverbs and delays and all the parts in the mix. Learn and learn and learn then try and try and try. After at least 40 yrs of experience you are pro but no master yet           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

The more audio One produces, the harder this becomes (particularly when you are so intimate with the piece, as in your own music..)

I believe this is one reason why typically the Mix Engineer is someone different than the producer / performers / composers. When all of these tasks rely on a single individual (i.e. Electronic Music ) there is a need for a lot of self-discipline in order to detach your scope and focus on the task in mind to think out and obtain the desirable mix effect.
