ok so now im at the point where I am comfortable enough with my music production, compostion, music theory and synthesis....so now Im actually at the mixing and mastering stage...I understand headroom and stuff but I still dont feel all that confident about how I am doing my mixes and mastering....so any and all tips would be welcome...I was thinking like helping me out in what mistakes you made and what was the hardest thing for you guys to master...also any links and books you would like to share would definetly be most appreciated....THANKS

Hi!

I really recommend starting with this book: The art of mixing http://www.amazon.com/Art-Mixing-Recording-Engineering-Production/dp/1931140456

Just looking at the front cover can give a lot of insight on mixing           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

dont listen to bar mitzwa, hes crazy

first thing i found for mixing:

Mixing is basically tinkering with everything you have recorded to complete your songs. You'll do things like drop in effects, adjust fader, EQ your tracks and so on. Think of mixing as putting the puzzle together. You're putting together the parts of what you have recorded, making sure everything hangs together right, and putting some finishing touches on things. When you're done mixing your songs, you should pleased with the way the song sounds and feel confident that you don't need to add anything

Mastering is a different art... dont think about it and try to make a perfect mix. to get an impression about cheap do
it yourself mastering check this out:

the best thing about mixing i read was:

"Mixing Secrets for the small studio"

I'm no pro, but i'd like to just say one thing i've experienced while mixing, the monitors can be ridiculously deceptive! I mean, with good monitors it's possible to expand stereo to unreal levels, and get a mix which is too good to be true, but it sounds unbelievably muddy and crowded when played on normal speakers or headphones. I'd watch out for that. I mean, one thing that helps is to always have a spare pair of headphones plugged in to see if things aren't too cruddy on them though it seems perfect on the monitors...
