I have been thinking about getting myself a small 4 track mixer with inserts so I can use it with my external compressor.
Any recommendations for something cheap and good?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

man, what soundcard do you have? instead of totally aggravate and bastardise your sound with cheap mixer maybe it is better to skip it and route everything back to soundcard's inputs

not sure what compressor to recommend besides focusrite compounder (hi, Tim)

Don't get something that will add more noise in your signal path. Rather use the compressor with your soundcard. Logic has an I/O plug in, that breaks the signal at the insert point, sends it out to get processed and then returns it back to that insert point, with latency off course, but you can delay off set the channel so that its tight with the rest of the sequences of you arrangement.

My guess is that other sequencers must have a plug in that does the same job.

i guess the gentlemen are right with what they say. if you still gonna opt for a small board i´d recommend allen&heath, e.g.
http://www.thomann.de/de/allenheath_zed_14_b_stock.htm

everybody loves their sound, especially the eq section. if you record that into your hopefully good analog in of your soundcard (would not trust the inbuilt a/d of the board too much) it should be fine + you have a sexy analogue eq to get some mojo from.           http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/stereofeld-frequenzwechsel

small old mackie from the 90s (micro serie) , many producers still use these next to console that cost 20 times their price cause of their sound caractere (but not as one and only console ). you can find one for a bit more than 100 euros.

here it s popular by french electro artists ect.. daft punk and lot of the french artists from house techno contribued to make it famous ,they can use it next to a neve, just for that sound.

i might get one to use with my drum machine and synths , i will report if it happen

dunno about the desk "degrading" sound quality. i know for example that several well produced and well known acts use low end mixers for tracking and mix down, still the final product is very very good sounding.
posford uses a mackie for all his tunes:
"From the first Hallucinogen album to the latest Younger Brother release, all of Posford's output has been recorded on a Mackie 32:8 analogue desk. "I've had one since they first came out," he says. "I must admit I don't really like it but I can't complain too much — people do say our production is very good." (info from http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan08/articles/youngerbrother.htm)

so what comes out is not dependant really of the board so much.. the allen&heath are supposed to sound much better as well.

and i for myself do know cause i have been in the studio that the saafi brothers recorded their albums on a tascam board that you can have for 300€ that is rated shite in the net if you read about it. still the records sound fantastic as can be heard. as long as you work right with it..

that might lead to the conclusion you are not exactly limited by the board, no? i´d give it a go, i have the same plan btw and will do it when i have the money.

neve ssl ect it s not possible to compare .. it s not in same universe but low end stuff can be still great and usefull . but i doubt i would sum my tracks in a low end desk tbh, it can be too much noisy and remove some details ect..thought it may be perfect for some stuff..
if i get the small mackie i dont expect much.. just to add some color on some synth , using it like a processor driving it.. but i m sure it can t touch a great console that sound really expensive with great detailed sound and mojo, great eqs and pre..

the old mackie vlz are kinda craps too imo..since then i used better desk that sound way better(but costed maybe 50 times the price). psytrance always been made with low end stuff more or less in term of processing.. if they use this lot of time its cause of budget more than the sound.

buying some good console strips is a better idea if you want high quality parts

klippel look for old german stuff, i will post you some link .; you can buy some racked strips from great console for not much, studer ect.. small console that can cost easily 3000/4000 euros.
with a console like this i can assure you, your mix will never sound the same...but if you like it or not is a other question..
