i belive the only rule is to search what sound good to you and train your hears for this. but if your looking for some basic things to keep in mind, you should think about what instruments you want to be played in the center or on the sides. this makes a huge difrence in the mix. too much stereo sounds make too much informations on the sides and not enough in the midle. thinking like these, stuff like kick, bass and some other stuff are usually always mono(if your using a vst or plugin bounce in mono)bounce all sounds so you choose this for each sound and you can also check for phase cancelations and correct what you can. see what kind of sounds are richer in stereo information/content like cymbals. mono vs stereo when making music is prepering for a good mix, just like the frequencie balance of spectrum.
