I think that is an american term and there's another way of saying it in the UK, but that is how learned it in uni.
Its basically mixing the compressed version of say a drum kit, with the uncompressed version of it.
The compressed version has the solid body of the kit with, whereas the uncompressed brings in some of the original transient content (as much as you want since you are mixing it in) that is missing from the compressed version.
One would expect to get the same results from simply using a slower attack on the compressor and let the original transients through, but it actually sounds different.

the mix of your track sould sound just as good like the released music only lower in volume, thats the only rule i have, then the mastered version of your track will be great.
so just compare it with released music and make your sound just as good.

Comparing is essential, not only between the track and one u like. Also always compare the signal with the eq/comp/or sth else with the original signal. Does it sound better?, need it changes?, Do i have a comp there coz 'it have to be compressed'?
Keep an eye/ear on ultra low/high freqs and on resonating freq.
Important for a good mix are the volumes of the single tracks in the track.
Eq tracks while playing them with the rest of the sounds.

Nahh sorry but if its good it will sound FAT before mastering...
No mastering will save a bad mix.
The best the mix the less the mastering work to be done,
the worst the mix, the more mastering work must be done...
Some Mixes are so good they almost donŽt need mastering or donŽt need at all. Also some times when mastering a compilation the best track is choosen as the reference to master the others...
Mastering is also done with reference tracks...
ThereŽs no thing like "comparing your music to unmastered tracks" imo....U should always use for reference the released tracks you like the sound the most, and try to get there...
Like dj tKu said, if you do it this way then the mastered version will only be better
But it definetelly should sound FAT before hitting any mastering studio
Like some ppl said here the main difference of a mastered track is the loudness...so just stick a maximizer in your master, bypass it while you mix, and turn it when you what to do the reference comparisons, just to give it some more power...weŽll, thats how I do at least |

Don't forgot to mix with monitors, otherwise there is not much point.

for me a track is ok if it sounds good on my hifi, mp3-player, my 'kitchen-radio' (cause it has only one box) and in the car.
to come to a result that's near mastering, try to listen as quit as possible on it - if every sound has his position it shoul be ok;) |

compression is a part of mixing
a good mix should sound very diferent from a master... again, masterization is just preparing a mix for a format (mp3, cd , vinil, whatever)

it helps to have visual reference of your mix... well it doesn't count that much as your ears do...
try to use span www.voxengo.com (free) or waves paz analyzer. squeeze some released material through it and compare your mix. very helpful.
rms is a good point to start. there's alot to find out. www.google.com

you know a mix is good when you bounce while working on it. simple but true! if you can't crank it up and go YAHhh!!!!! then just delete it and start over. if it don't fit, don't force it.
hardest part is finding bass modules that don't kick out totally mushy crapola. |
