I think best is to mix digital as loud as possible without clipping at 0.0db.            Signature

for sure the best is loud as possible with not many peaks on the mix.
I think that -1 till 0db is the best           http://www.myspace.com/boogieman

We just had some tracks mastered at 4CN studio, and one of the tracks was mixed down at -6db, i thought it would be a problem, but the master turned out fine, was one of the better tracks!

I personally usually mixdown with at lease 1db headroom at the extreme peaks.

in all honesty overall mix level doesn't really matter (as long as it's not something ridiculously low) as long as it sounds good, there are no blatant peaks and few freq clashes. It's just to do with complexity.

Just remember though, no clipping... before you mix down your track (if you're using cubase) play it through once on 0 without limiting etc. (silently if oyu want) and see what the final clipping output is on the mixer, then reduce the master out by that amount, play it again and make sure its as loud as it can be without clipping.

A good mastering engineer will make it sound better whatever the final output...
but again remember, "mastering is no quick fix, it's all in the mix" practise makes perfect hehe

U can mix also -3 or -6 if u like...i think will not be a problem...we sent a track mixed at -6 ...didn't have the master in my hands but we made a mastering ourselves to check if it is going to be good..no problem
Mix as u wish.....I know people mixing at -6 and have killer production...also people mix at 0 and have killer production..It is more a matter of balance....than the peak level!

nick are u serious telling me to prevent clipping by adjusting the m vu????u no wot happens if u fuck around wit it??
i no that if u touch it u get burned....never do so if u already do....
i believe that the best is always to have some headroom, though its amount depents on the whole process and progress and on how u intend to master it..
but most wise ppl leave a biiiig headroom...
i sud become wise then...

Digital mix doesn't need headroom.            Signature

Colin, of course I am but I didn't write that.

industed is talking about a "m vu". I'm not sure what he/she means. Are you looking at a VU meter in an analogue console?

Umm... I'm talking about sequencing using a sequencer like cubase, and personally i've never been "burned" and all that's happened when i "fucked around with it" is that I get nasty sounds when it clips and a good sound when it doesn't. From what i know (and what EYB said, and Colin agreed with, and UnderTow was innately right about ) Digital mixing doesn't need headroom because it's... well... digital. Analogue i can possibly understand if only i knew what you were talking about mvu...?
