Misuse of the word "remix"

Something I've noticed in the psy scene as well as in the world of EDM in general is that the word "remix" is overused: more specifically, it's used to refer to reworks which don't use any of the original audio from the original track, and would be more accurately termed "covers".

Does this bother anyone else or just me?

'Covers' actually refers to playing the original song. Like a Led Zepplin cover band plays Led Zepplin songs and usually as accurately as they can.

I personally haven't heard any remix that doesn't use any of the original audio. Can you give some examples?

i have heard ' remixes' that have nothing in common with the original, which is pretty stupid imho. but what annoys me probably more is 'remixes' that are pretty the same as the original. Why make a remix if it is pretty much the same?

I think people that do alot of remixes are only in it for the fame that a already known name can give... Its like a business to fill CD space or make remix albums...
Though sometimes you can hear that the remixer really had a idea and made something good out of it... So its not all bad! i think its nice with a "single" that contains some remixes... Like in the "trance" scene..

Anyway
these artists that go around and ask for votes for Dj of the month... its too much ego! and not so much hearth and soul!

And i never heard a cover of a psytrance track, that really sounds difficult... of course generic music will sound similar... and melodies can be alike... but much about psytrance is about timbre and layers of sounds and interesting atmospheres and rhythmic drive.. there is soo much unique you can do if you work with details...

when you write the word remix next to a stupid track...it sells
when you make a remix of famous track without permission you can get sued
when you take a sample from a famous track and add it to your track its a merger but since you may not be as famous as the original producer/artist you find it necessary to promote it as a remix.
the business of remix can put you in the limelight instantly.           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

Right on. I don't think its too bad in our scene though, for more mainstream electronica like house its much worse. You can make a super track but if you don't have contacts/pull and nobody knows about you then its not gonna work. If you want people to notice you, make a good remix of some popular artist and you can make a name for yourself. Can't say I like it, but that seems to be how it works...

Actually I think the psy scene is much better that way, not so obsessed with 'names' and fame.

I was thinking of the Richter and Hertz 'remix' of "Skywalker" by Power Source that's out on Geomagnetic.

The only piece of audio that's the same is the speech (which was probably sampled from something else, so that doesn't really count), all of the synths, drums and bassline are recreated.

Edit: also "cover" does not necessarily mean that it's identical to the original version

Ex: Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All along the watchtower", 311's cover of "Love Song", etc...

Also with respect to the comments about remixing in the mainstream EDM scene:

It's actually better to have a more well-known producer remix YOUR track when starting out, since they will probably have more experience producing and will likely produce a more polished final product than you, and having their name on the track will increase exposure.

Dunno...but when it comes to techno for instance, some RMX's are so ridiculously different from the original that makes it almost impossible to recognize any similarity...this can be good if you're buying an EP, so you can mix them both and nobody can call you cheap.

I don't think I mind a "remix" that sounds nothing like the original track.

What does somewhat annoy me is a "remix" that sounds almost the same as the original track. Like someone said earlier. It's like, what exactly did you do other than a few tweaks here and there? Can you really call it a remix if you didn't put that much thought into?

Actually "cover" usually use in acoustic or unplugged version of songs. "Remix" is some kind of using samples from original track and just make other way of arrange in track with admixture of some of your additional.
"Rework" is like doing some track inspired by original version. Like all melodies and everything from original is from same note played in reworked track in other or same music style. Like point is to play the same thing with your own instruments and arrange.
So I consider the phrase on that way. I don't say that I'm right but that's the way I think about that.
