it took me ages to figure out how to do these distorted sounds, and now that I found one, I just had to squeeze it in, big and dumb.. may be too cheesy for some.. but anyway.. probably not a final version, by the way, so opinions are very welcome.

A track isnt finished until it's finished

I dont quite follow which distorted lead you are talking about, but I dont find anything is this cheesy (check out my stuff too see some cheeesy stuff) - but man please play more with distortion! It can really make your leads scream.

Also using filters that have a "drive" function makes the resonance distort in amazing ways (like hallucinogen..), I say play with that, and then try feeding this signal into different distortion units.

Regarding the units, there are so many different types for you to explore: distortion, overdrive, fuzz, saturation, etc., which all behaves in different ways - and then there are specific units for guitars, with amazing results!

Like that lead from 2:27 to 3:21, it's nice but you could automate several different types of distortion into it, so it starts out clean, and say in 20 seconds a distortion unit is introduced and you automate the wet knob until 100%, then for the next 10 seconds you add a new distortion and decrease the existing one to 50%, and then you go on with more units / different distortion values

Keep working, make more

Regarding the tune, there are some details that can be enhanced, but overall I really like the sounds and story: with a better mix and some care this would be an amazing tune           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

cool, thanks for the effort; I really meant just this specific kind of fm-type distortion; never could figure that out for whatever reason.
anyway, hopefully I can check this next week in a "real" studio, to find some more ideas for improvement.

Post a smaller example or tell us where in the track is the leads you are talking about, maybe we can be more specific!

But, in the end it's never a single thing nor a fixed procedure.. it's a matter of tweaking and tweaking some more until it's just right And, since distortion behaves quite differently depending on the source, it's all about trial and error.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz
