Too quickly!? It's taken over 10 years to get this far. Personally I'd like to see serious numbers of people dancing to my music before I retire.
And please don't equate playing on Ministry of Sound radio with 'selling out'. I've lost count of the number of people who have said things like Quote:
| most of the artists mentioned are those who have already established themselves as more commerically based artists... but I'd definately want to hear Protoculture play |
|
Basically everyone's saying "it's horrible and commercial but fine if artists I like are playing"...
Frankly if you automatically become a sell-out if more than a certain number of people like your music then it makes me wonder. It seems to me that people don't want too many others to like the same music they do... and why? Does it make you feel less 'special' if someone else has a similar taste in music? Is your taste the only arbiter of what is 'good'? What about artists who set out just to write the best music they can, but suddenly find themselves popular - because they succeeded in their aims? Have they 'sold out'? How do you expect artists to know which opportunities to turn down? Please let me know because Voice of Cod has a guest DJ slot on John 00 Fleming's Ministry of Sound radio show coming up and I want to know whether or not to tell him to stuff it.
PS. I'm not expecting serious answers to these questions because I know this isn't the place for that... but please try not to get too emotional when slagging me off for asking them, ok?

you guys make me laugh with your obsession about selling out / not selling out. you like to define yourselves in opposition to the "mainstream", whatever that is, as an end in itself, which is pretty stupid if you think about it. it's like you're some kind of cultural amish sect.
and i totally agree with everything colin said above (hope you are well col, long time no see )

Great news, lets just hope they'll get a more varied list of artists in the future, also with progressive/dark/minimal/twisted/etc. artists and DJ's - psytrance is so much more than just full on.
By the way - does any of the whining psy-snobs remember Paul Oakenfolds Goa-mix on BBC's Radio 1 some 10 years ago? DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

listen to all you wanna be pop stars....if the corporate world take control of this scene, from my opinion, its fucked.ministry is as corporate as it gets.
if they venture into the realms of the underground like john peel did then great.something new.
if they dont then it is simply smearing the radio waves with cheesy new wave poo.this is what is happening at the festivals nowadays,Sonica(hello, wake up call! mc's on the psy trance stage.shouting."your momma, cum now,ect with limiters on the music so you can hear them".
its commercial pants.its not about amount of fans,i believe its about changing your music to create something you think the masses will want.thats commercial!i think music should be personal.
when this point is excepted by the artists i think people will stop going on about it.
but this is a forum so it may never stop!

Paul oakenfold and danny rampling also released their own mixed psy trance cds on dragonfly back in the days..
TO the point i think its a good effort Evy (knowing your activities for a while now ) but as most people here said if it would stick to commercial trance or "the big names" as people refer to here it will not really make any difference, so I would expect to see a coverage of the rest of the people who are "close to the plate" but nothing too innovative other than that hope im wrong..
Regarding the "commercialize or die" topic i agree with dirty 1 on one hand that commercialism is indeed making something the masses are supposed to find more appealing in order to sell more, but i definitely agree with Colin regarding the catch 22 in this issue of "not wanting to go above surface" thats crap (excuse my french) i believe every label/artist want to become popular, I know little to no artists who wake up in the morning and tell themselves: "wow the track i finished yesterday is very good but its too commercial so I dont think i want to release it lets make some crappy music so I will not need to be loved by more people or heaven forbid play in a big festival some day.." and if there are people who think this way well I pity them.. I want to progress and progress means when you expand the borders of your listeners, its hard as hell but not impossible imo.. but yet again this is why we have the forum, exactly for these kinds of debates..
To sum things up hope the show will be succesful but I hope more that it will be varied and not deal only with the close mafia as said before trance has multiple genres within it if you want to explore please do!

i think if maybe a few more kiddos hear psytrance around the world, and buy a few cds, i cant be a bad thing for the rest of us... puts some money back into the artists and labels pockets, its not like psytrance isnt known to the rest of the world now or anything... to me i think its more sad that they press 80 000 copies of a pop single in one country but maybe 2000 of a psytrance cd worldwide? we need to attract more of a buying market, and i think shows like this do that...

the current state in the EU concerning sales is ownload, download and download
also the state in the parties is : 1*20$(party entrance,to cover the rent, the equipment, the artists fee,the crew, usually 1 free drink and the profit of the promoter which in many cases takes the responsibility for everything(if u know what I mean))
and 1*10=one drop
2*10=2 E's in order to dance our butts off
1*80=My girl don't take trippies or E's and I like romantic moments(sniff sniff)
1*60=I must have some K,I'm fucked up and
1*30=must have some traditional joints
so nobody's buying cd's because they need the money to cover other expences.
also nobody's willing to pay 50$ just to enter the party(me neither)
the artists and the labels are starving cause they can't make a profit and this opportunity comes.why should not take it?go for it ppl and slap asses the psychedelic way!
at least MOS is a kick ass venue with kick ass sound and many beautiful girls!
this msg has no meaning at all but anyway I just wanted to say something before ppl start to accuse other ppl for going commercial !
respect,
