Okay, is it just me..
Does EVERYBODY use midi tracks to trigger their percussion samples through battery or ESX24 or some sampler?
I use Cubase and I import all the individual percussion hits I want then move them around on the arrange page, I just find it easier to work with audio bits because I can see the rhythm.
I don't get any velocity changes, but if I wanted a sound at a different level I'd automate the volume, or put it on a different track.
I'll be honest, I'm happy with the way I work, it looks a bit unsightly but I like the idea of grabbing single hits and timestretching, reversing, chopping..
I don't know anyone else that does it this way. Am I wasting time?
Also, is it possible in SX to group a bar of audio objects into a 'part' like a midi part then duplicate it and create ghost copies? If you could do this I think I'd never use midi for percussion again.

Yes this is possible. You can do it in two ways
(1) If you haven't yet placed any audio clips, make a clip container (draw it in the track pane), and open it (double click) and then insert your audio clips there. Now you can copy this container anywhere you want (you can also make linked copies).
(2) If you already placed (individual) audio clips in the track pane, you can glue them together to make a container wrap them.
cheers

i like to use samplers,it give me more control ,you can tune ,use the envelops and make all the glitchie stuff and a lot more, then i bounce and use a audio track.i see samplers like a electronic instrument,it really improved my tracks technically . |

dtd! Perfectomundo!
I suppose it comes down to what your happiest using, if you can get the sme results. But another instrument open is another distraction, simplicity in the arrange page is the key for workflow. |

i did a test with all my beat in audio tracks using fade and one with using sampler envelop, this one was sounding better, more groovy, then i tried to adjuts the fade in audio tracks to get same results and i couldn t get close.the best for me is using the sampler then the audio track. |

I work the same way as you do Tomos & i know quite a few producers that do the same..I don't see any reason why it should be a waste of time..
If i understand your question correctly you can just select all your audio parts, right click & choose 'events to part'
Now all the audio files will make up one part instead of all those little hits..Then you can duplicate it as many times as you want..

im in love with battery and stylus remix
So much features that will make your percussion sound fucking smooth!
I like to use the bit reducer and compressor of the battery a lot
and in battery 3 you have even more features, didnt check em out yet cause it doesnt seem as stable as v2.

i use both but i mostly edit in audio, i find it very useful to control the length, reverse and to use offline on individual precussion hits. you can control the level of individual hits by just placing the mouse on the audio clip and pull the top line down. and you can even draw any volume envelope you want by just picking the pencile tool and draw on the audio clip.

I've used both battery and audio clips to do percussion..I think it just depends on what your ideas are for the track. Sometimes working with audio clips gives you more creative range, other times it isn't necessary. I've switched my percussion from battery to audio clips for certain parts as well, or sometimes just rendering a solo loop from battery and using that for specific parts rather than using audio percussion for the whole track.. |

i like to work with audio clips too but first i make all the beat in kontakt( tuned they just need little eq and you don t loose all the meat like if you were tuning it with a eq) tuning is a big factor between good and not so good production, and you have the envelops too as i said ,you can get more groove... i think using both is the best.

i bounced a basic pattern, you can hear that with tuning you get 1/2 of the job done, there is no eq in the project only a comp on the bass and one on the kick(they pump badly ..) and the balance is not that great, is far to beeing perfect... but just with audio tracks in cubase i ll get a hard time getting the same result.
