Hey profs
I'm new in here. I just bought a midi-keyboard (Edirol). I'm a bit confused, does the midi data(note on note off) go through the USB cable? or do I need a midicable?

If you aren't using any other USB devices it can be good to turn off the USB in BIOS.
USB takes cykels of the CPU to check for addeed devices, and therefore decrease timning and performance a little bit.
And in a situation like mine with a soundcard with decent built in MIDI you are actually adding a unnecessary extra set of drivers.
I have mine connected with the USB cable to give power, which it get's even with USB turned off.
Then I use a MIDI cable to my MIDI interface instead.
If you have a MIDI interface already, and are struggling with performance using USB it can be worth trying. |

That's very interesting.. I might have to give that a shot...

USB has a lot more bandwidth than MIDI, but you only would run in to the limit of MIDI by using many channels with loads of controller data.
With a controller kb you would normally just have the one channel you are playing running in the cable, and I think you would need many fast hands to use up the MIDI bandwidth. |
