Midimiliz

Passages

Boshke Beats Records ( www.boshkebeats.com )

2002

**** 1/2

With an almost literary approach to their often varied style of psy-trance, Midimiliz’ Passages is a work highly deserving of being called an "artist album." Any less of a descriptive definition is simply an injustice.

By turns, Passages is pulsating, progressive and interpretative. It begins steady and sure, patiently laying out the psy funk on "Interleaved" before turning the temperature up every so slightly on the mystical vibe and sweeping rhythmic hook of "Phenomena" (one of three tracks co-produced by X-Dream’s Marcus C. Maichel.)

As the first two tracks play themselves out, though, their importance is not accentuated until "The Missing Guest," a dark anxiety mystery, begins building the tempo up even higher in preparation of Passages unforgettable moments.

"No Exit" is the evaporating payoff that the first three tracks excellently build up towards. The track snarls with potent precision, almost to the point where one can easily imagine this beast’s furnace-hot breath and sticky saliva coating their face. It’s an absolute pounder, fully focused on pulverizing mercilessly.

Yet, many more might find that the superb follow-up on "Format: Phono" could, and arguably should, be considered this work’s finest creation. The full-on blast is less intense but the rhythmic shimmers that come on unexpectedly are unforgettably provocative.

Following the escalating turbulence of "Aeromode" and the lurking creepiness of "Stalker," Passages does degenerate a bit for a couple of tracks, lacking both the vision and the intrigue of what came before.

Yet, don’t allow that to dissuade. The party flavored "Starz***" bounces, funks and disarms with deliciously progressive, offbeat vocals and likably accessible house flavors. It ends Midimiliz’ passages of psy poetry in the same manner that it began – bold and creatively thoughtful.

Writing a review for this release quickly becomes a pleasure. I, like all music listeners want to be blown away when I listen to new music.
Right away this disc does not disappoint. Compared to the overall sound of the disc the first track "Interleaved" is more laid back and slower paced. Emotional string sounds greet the listener and suck them in for the duration of the slow groove.
The second track "Phenomena" calls you with it's "pained" sounding synths and takes you on a journey with a horn sound all while the track gently pounds away at you. This track is easy to lose yourself in setting you up
for the pounding the next stage of the release goes through.
Quickly after "The Missing Guest" begins you realize that this track is out to get you... and it succeeds. A field of bass that seems to roll
gives the life and color to the track. The sounds are added and taken away in a very subtle fashion challenging the listener to hear the hidden depths to the track. This track is guaranteed instant success on any dance-floor, anytime.
The massive soundscape doesn't let up on the next track "No Exit".
Possibly the best marriage of sounds ever produced in this genre of music. "No Exit" starts strong and never lets up through several unique and equally pounding sections.
Anyone looking for relief or a reprieve from the high octane sounds they are listening to won't find a cure from "Format Phono". Having heard this track live this reviewer can attest to it's capabilities on a dance floor. A funky bass and a big alarm sound really make this one you will remember at a party.
"Aeromode" will also be familiar to BB fans. A unique track with a full sound not for the faint of heart. A fat un-compromising bass drum greets the listener and immediately kicks them in the pants. The beauty of
this track is in it's constant evolution. The lements of the track remain intact but are always changing within the track making it really seem like the track is alive.
The next phase of the journey takes a turn down some scary terrain. A personal favorite "Stalker" lives up to it's name. Dark travels await the listener of this track. There is a sound barried in the mix that sounds
like a distant voice (not of human origin) is calling.
"Baxandall" evolves with a liquidy sound that gets greeted with a techno screech who when married produce a cool ride to start the track. An interlude in the middle seems to bring the listener back to this cool ride later in the track. As the track picks up pace you can almost sense when the screech is going to come back and you can't wait.
"Mrs Vargas" starts with a positive sounding melody that sticks with the track throughout. This track builds differently than any other on the disc with all sounds revolving around the positive melody from the beginning.
Greeted with a vocal break in the middle of the track listeners can learn where the titling for the track was generated. Overall the track makes the listener feel good while listening to it, and after the lisening session
the melody sticks in your head and makes you remember the positive feeling the track created for you.
Marrying a techno sound to Louis Armstrong vocals sound like a challenge?
Well Midi Miliz proves not only can it be done, but it can be done well in a fun end of the release track. Only one negative can be said about "Starz***", it ends the album thus ending the listening experience. Two thumbs way up!

Great review Inborga,i want to marry you!
Thank you!

Mr.Trip - this music was played all around the globe on biggest and same time smallest open airs, where i had a chance to present myself and dance happyfully of joy with hundreds and thousands other people drinking chai, smile and flying out to other dimensions. Off course there is a lcub tracks on this album as well but its not all about clubbing, not at all.

Misha- will you please let others review your label's release in peace? We'll do without your encouragements.
Thanx.

As for the album after two listens I can say that I'm impressed. This is a very musical release. Favorites so far are 3, 5, 7(!), 9, 10(!!).

Wako- you should try this one.
And philip, some of the tracks here are so psychedelic and I would love to both play and dance to them outdoors. Some would even fit excellently in the middle of a full on set as well.

Midimiliz
Passages
Boshke Beats

This should come with health warning: do not listen to this cd while driving. I did, and managed to drive the ten minute journey to work in just over five. I have no idea how this happened. But I can only assume it was down in part to Midimiliz. Interleaved kicks off with that classy, clattering crunch and with the additional aphexy touches it’s enough to keep techno purists gurning along all night. Phenomena shook the car and may possibly have damaged the houses I was driving past with its lethal sub frequencies, and the “propa techno” groove of The Missing Guest hypnotises you before giving you a headbutt you’ll be remembering for weeks. Recent single No Exit sounds just as wicked on here, and Format:Phono is just class. Acidy touches add to the depth, the rhythm hooks are sharp and defined, and it has a spooky, paranoid melody that’ll keep you running and running. Stalker and Baxandall shift the atmosphere more to the back, with a more laidback and easy groove hidden in the chunks, and the timeless detroit classic feel of Mrs Vargas is gobsmacking. Finally Starz has definite anthem potential despite it’s over-used (though individual) sample. The whole Midimiliz sound isn’t to everybody’s taste, but this album takes the subgenre on, gets it in a headlock, kicks it in the balls, and steals its lunch money.
