How can I use the sixteen midi channels with one vsti. I thick they call this multi timbral. Example: channel 1 kick, channel 2 bass, channel 3 lead etc. with a different patch on each channel. Also how can I change patches if I am only using one midi channel. I am confuzed with these issues I have been reading the book cubase sx power and the manuel, but I am missing something. Any help would be great. Thanks

Depends on the VSTi. Not all VSTi's are multi-timbral; the ones I know of that are include Model E, Kontakt and Halion. Most VSTi's only work mono-timbrally (ie they only play one sound at a time) but will respond to any MIDI channel. In practise this is not a problem, as you can use as many instances of each VSTi as you like, and have a different sound on them all.
If you are only using one MIDI channel then you are not working multi-timbrally, and any patch change messages you are sending out will change the patch on that instrument (assuming it understands patch-change messages). To send a patch change message in the middle of the track you need to write it into a part by hand using either the key editor or the list editor. The manual or the power book should tell you how to do this.
