Ok this has been bothering me for a couple of years now and I don't know why I've never asked about this before, but here goes.

Now when I'm using Old faithful Evo 249c Mk2 to control, for example a filter even with the finest of tweaks I'm noticing big jumps between a rather large section of frequencies. Is this one of the constraints of midi and the whole 1-127 thing or is it the sort of thing you can overcome with a better quality controller.

Do any hardware synths do this stepping thing?

Does this piss off anyone else else?

If so what ways are there of working around it?

yes very irritating , maybe its got to do with the quality of controller , no idea .. but Im guessing proper synths don't do that .. do they ? .. anyway , in FL is a nice `smoothing` feature when u want to map , but for very precise stuff , use automation clips

I remember seeing the word buffer once long ago. I'm a open vst/piano roll/automation then export kind of guy you see. Not much for tinkering with setups.

So whose buffer are we talking about?

my M-Audio Radium 49 does have steps , also the feel of it is plastic toy...
on the nord , it feels so acurate and the steps are so rare and even if its there its less then 50% then the midi toy.
silicon rules hehe (and also that tool that straight up steps record)

Yes of course it probably has alot to do with the 0-127 MIDI limitations. When we consider that with MIDI we are limited to 128 increments which are integers and we are trying to scale something such as sound frequency which is exponential there is some issue with mapping a potentiometer to a filter.

Most of the time plugin developers or whatever have done serious maths to get a smooth (exponential) curve for CC messages to be assigned to filter cutoffs. SO... yeah in reality it shouldn't be the design of the midi controller that affects it cos all it is doing is sending data to the plugin which is what actually handles the scaling maths.

Its a fuckin mind fuck in Max/MSP something I will have to be dealing with quite soon hehe

A synth which uses analogue filters doesn't have the scaling issues that a MIDI controller has because MIDI is digital and is dealing with integers whereas analogue is continuous voltage information.

Me too. Although I was thinking of using my Midi controller with my Evolver (still waiting for it...) through a plugin called Evolver Vizor.

Does anyone have experience with this program, especially when it comes to midi?           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
