same as a automation for volume or pan for example , you click on the R ,it s green now and you can draw some points one the line, you can use it with all vst in cubase(filters ,delay feedback ... all parameters).i dont know how too explain exactely cause of my english but i m sure some guys ll tell you.In this way no need midi controller for recording the perfect automation for a filter for example(you can t do it so perfect with your hands and midi controller expect if you do 100000 recordings or are very skilled). |

hi all!
energyXT: http://www.xt-hq.com
There you can "learn midi" for every parameter.
Maybe this can help?

Also to find a certain cc , instead of searching trhu all combinations possible , u can press the Write button on vsti, make a recording , and Swoosh .. suddenly when u look in ur midi track ( under volumen , mute , pan , ) u suddenly have a new track openeed .. and its named ( in the controller lane ) as the cc it uses .. so if u twiddle the filter freq i.e and it has the cc 85 .. there will be a lane open in ur controller lane .. named cc 85

i don't think thats true, because i doubt that you can do coool filter/modulation/resonance, ... runs with your mouse, because the direct feedback while changing the parameters is missing.
if you really want freaky sounds, a controller is a must have.
and you don't have to record 10000 times, because there is still the chance to edit the recorded automation line.

In Cubase there are several different methods to record automation from your vst controller:
lemme try to write down those I know, please tell me any different methods.
GENERIC REMOTE:
program all your buttons and faders that are available and assign them to your vst's (either midi learn or hardcoded ones)
for my part, I only use it to enable my sustain pedal from my piano for automating record.
these automations get recorded directly to automation tracks.
HARDCODED CC NUMBERS
VST Synths and effects from the old day and some newer breeds like vanguard have a hardcoded set of cc's. Solution: Either reprogram the set of cc's from your midi controller or use generic remote.
VST LEARN SYNTHS
My favourite vst's are midi learn enabled. Either choose midi learn from a gui or menu. Most of them allow you to export the settings, so you don't need to do all the work again if you ever need a new config.
For Cubase SX3 there's a neat function that will record your midi automation directly to automation tracks. Check the manual or preferences.
Two methods to record CC # Automation in Cubase SX 3
MIDI TRACK (pre SX3)
Hit the W button on a midi track and the different automations will be placed right below your recorded notes. As a standard the midi track does show velocity, but you can change and add more lanes than that. The number of the cc will be displayed. Disadvantage: The start point of the automation gets screwed up and you often have to correct it manually
AUTOMATION TRACK
Some VST (mostly hardcoded ones) will record your automation movements to auotomation tracks, which you can find in the project window under VST -> VSTI/VSTfx name. Hit the W button there and do your tweaks.
As previously stated, there's this function that will allow you to record midi automation directly to automation tracks. This works since SX3. Push the W Button on a midi track and do your tweaks as I described in MIDI TRACK, but now the automation gets recorded as an automation track below the midi track.
AUTOMATE VST EFFECTS
Some newer vst effects are aswell midi learn enabled (example: fabfilter volcano, ohmforce, camel phat and -space)
You can access this feature in assigning a midi track to the VST Effect in the projects windows (just as you assign a midi track to a VST Synth) From that point you can use automation tracks again.
So why did I write this? I always asked myself, how to get all these technical things back to a minimum, because I didn't like to use the generic remote sub menu. As a result of that I got rid of most stuff that isn't midi learn enabled. I have to say I do have more fun while writing music and automation. |

In logic,
to control the mixer parameters and native plugs 'from the outside' we have to transform CC data in 'Fader Events'. This is the type of data that Logic recognizes...
How to do that???
First of all you want to know wich fader event number is assigned to the parameter you want to 'tweak'.
In the enviroment go to the 'NEW' menu and select monitor. A new monitor object has been created (this is a midi monitor).
Plug the slice of the mixer where you want to 'tweak' to this monitor (on the top right corner of each slice, there's a little arrow, if you don't see this, go on VIEW menu and select 'View Cables'). After plugging the slice to the monitor, every parameter that you 'tweak' will be shown on the monitor. Now it tells you wich fader event corresponds to that parameter.
Now... still on the enviroment, but on the Clicks&Ports page, you have your midi 'routing' from the physical input (soundcard midi in) all the way to the sequencer. We just have to transform data from Control Change to the desired Fader Event. (...do it between the physical input and the sequencer objects.)
On the NEW menu select transformer, and a new Transformer Object is created.
Now we have to tell inside the transformer object (double click to open it) that everytime CC data is coming in, fader events data will go out, and you can specify all the numbers, values and inclusively midi channels where you want to make the transformations...
Now, ...this object (transformer), I say it again, must be in the midle of your physical input and the sequencer object. So you have to plug it that way...
I hope this was helpfull "The Light Children Are Awakening!" |

On the enviroment (windows/open enviroment), by default you are on the audio page (the place where you see all the mixer), ...now, on the left side there's a little field with the word audio on it as well as a little arrow. Click and hold on the arrow and you'll be browsing all the enviroment pages...

sideFXed , you said vanguard has hardcoded cc's? is that why when i use generic remote midiCC learn on my controller it doesnt control how i like? i reprogrammed my controller (m-audio oxygen8v2) so that for all my presets, my knobs had specific cc's and then i used midi-learn in cubase but sometimes in vanguard my knobs dont work the way i programmed them to. how can i get around the hardcoded cc's? thanks!

There's a switch on the "back" of the Vanguard. Click the settings button (I think - something like that - near the load/save banks/patches buttons on the Vanguard) and it will show a "back view" that has pretend power cables and signal wires, kind of like Reason does.
There's a button there that says "Ignore CC"
