Hello fellow musicians!

This is a thing thats been bothering me for quite some time, and i havent got into it, too little experimenting i guess. Sometimes i wonder if im just afraid to fiddle or am i just a lazy bastard... i guess both.

Now to the topic. I guess many of you people here are using somekind of hardware controller, some might just use a midi keyboard to play Vstiīs and some might use a midi controller to control both keys and knobs of the vstiīs. There are other options aswell, but itīs not of any interest right now:)

this question goes for those who use their synth or midi controller to control vstiīs knobs and stuff in realtime(as real as it gets, depending on your latency)

My experience of this is limited and i havent really gone deep about it, dont know how deep it is, but itīs something i overlooked and now feel the urge to understand.

What i know is that
this is all so easy in FL, it got that
smart "wrapper" that takes care of everything, but im not doing much work in FL right now, Cubase is still my main sequencer (that i obviously know too little about)
Anyway, if somebody wants to know how itīs done in FL just say so, i dont think its necessary to write about it if itīs not requsted

Yes!
of course its no big deal to record the acctual movements in cubase, but to have some knobs mapped out and be able to jam around and fit different sweeps and stuff is what im talking about

That "MidiControl" plug in cubase might be what im looking for? i really dont know.
Been thinking much about this, but i havent come any further than thinking about it.

i assume that this depends on your outboard gear, and that you somehow need to configure that gear to respond to midi CC numbers?

This is my setup:
Yamaha An1x
Audiophile 2496

If anyone is sitting on this information on how to map CCnr and stuff in cubase SX feel free to tell me
id love to know!

ok

well like i said i know how it works in nuendo1 , which is very similar to sx1

BUT... ur in sx2... which i presume to be more similar to n2... and whilst i dont know for sure about sx2... i know for a fact they removed the generic remote from n2 (i know because many people on the nuendo forums bitched hard about it)...

and its the generic remote thats essential here. access it from :

devices > device setup...
then choose "generic remote" section in that dialog

u should see something (a bit) like this:

http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/genericremote.jpg

now hopefully thats fairly self-explanatory. i know when i did this i didnt actually have a manual or anything i just worked it out. it was a while ago so i cant really remember in detail.

basically at the top u just choose the relevant midi in/out to/from your controller. then u can create entries in that table so that each "Control name" is set up to respond to, for example, a specific "Controller" (what u want - stuff like NRPN, note events, aftertouch etc are also available in that list) on a specific channel, (all this in the top half). then in the bottom half u set what that control , er, controls...

in that screenshot they're all set to "VST mixer" but if you change that field to "VST effects" and then change the "Category" field to "Device" then the "Value/action" field provides you a menu of all automatable plugin parameters from your vsts.

Erm.. sorry..

this turned out to be pretty confusing to explain, and probably doesnt even relate to your seq anyway :/

hey triptocoma,
i dont know how your midicontroller works but i have the midiman radium and i guess they work the same , anyway the knobs on your midicontroller are numberd from 1-128 and you can set each controller on any number you want(at least i can) so you i have memories 15 different memories on my keyboard so i arranged it from 1-128 so i have every number that i want.
now the knobs on your vst instruments are also numberd from 1-128 (every knob is a different number) is if i want to record something i search the knobe on the keyboard untill i find the knob i want to controll and thats it.
at the biggining its a bit fustrating but i use the same vst mostly so i memorise and most of the vst have a midi mapper that shows you which number controlls which knob and alot of times you can change it also.

hope i helped even though i think i didnt but i tried at least
good luck!

What about for Logic? Is this the same process to do that??? I am running Logic 5.5 and an Oxygen 8...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

dj tuK, the problem is that I don't want to change the controller numbers on my controller all the time, I want to route it using cubase

i guess your right its simpler that way ,
but you dont really have to change the configuration of the knobs all the time you have memories so you just switch to a different memmorie. but ill check it cubase i just never thought of doing it that way maybe i will change my way.

well i'm stuck still in that part..

anyone here have a midi controller (connected to the pc via USB) and working with Cubase Sx 2 ? i've Evolution X-Session and it's USB...and in the MIDI IN/OUT i only have my MIDI IN from my soundcard, but i don't have a midi cable to connected the X-session via soundcard..

so any of you guys have your MIDI Controller (via USB) working with Sx 2 ? i would love to work with her over USB...cos i don't need to by a cable and a DC Adapter of 9v.

anyone know a walktrough to set up a USB MIDI Controller working over USB in Cubase Sx 2 ? or any pages on the net..on how to setting it up ?

thanks..           http://www.soundcloud.com/hybrid-species

Im working on Cubase SX2 and i have an evolution mk-449c midi controller. I dont have a 'generic remote' section in the dialog though. So can you advice me on how to link vst's knobs to the midi controllers knobs? z3ta has the function in itself, but discodsp is different...

dont you guys find it easyer and no need 1000000 recordings to have the automation you want by just doing it with the automation point?i think it s the best and the smoother!!! try it , you ll forget your midi controller execpt for live sounds and automation or just for get a idea on how to draw the points

edit: i hope you understand me lol
