it s like mono/stereo , it s called sum and difference too .you can use use a m/s encoder with some fx (like a eq) to get some special effects on stereo signals.for exemple you can use a eq and add more stereo width in a frequency range or things like that.there lot of artistic tricks you can do ,the best is to experiments.voxengo have a free m/s encoder.

Is there anyone that cold elaborate on this. I've been wondering about it for a long time but never actually used it.

I read once you could use m/s encoding to remove sound from the middle of the stereo image and keep it at the sides.. is that true? Sounds dubious.

What can you use it for that is of any use to your mixes?

duplicate your channel
have each channel hard pan R/L
make time offset for one of them

it can also be chorus

but making it manual give the best control
even leave another channel in mono for the middle , diffrent phasers on each will make miracles , and if the mono channel untouched its stay clear and effected since alot of the time the modulation effects can get to unwaanted points           www.sattelbattle.com

Lots. A M/S encoder leaves you with an stereo audio signal such that the mono (or 'mid') component appears on the left channel and the stereo (or 'side') component appears on the right channel. In the virtual world, M/S audio needs to be re-encoded by the same plugin to be heard as regular L/R stereo.

If you've ever thought "I wish I could make the middle of this sound quieter but keep it just as loud at the sides", or "how do I get the low frequemcies of my bass in mono but keep the tops in stereo?", M/S encoding will be your friend.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Wow, thats really helpful. But I'll have to practice and wrap my head round it before I start using it.

Are all m/s encoders the same, being that they just split the signal. Does sound quality come into the equation? I notice the waves m/s encoder has no controls.

So, using M/S its instant mono compatibility?

Sounds great.. but I have no idea how it works! I'll research as it sounds really like it could be really important.

the voxengo msed can decode and recode with one instance, you have one fader for midle and one for the side(good for adjusting the balance betwin the too) .GeQ is a good eq and great for m/s equing too.

i doubt the sound is different from plugins , the middle is just the average of the left and right chanel and i don t remember from the side .. but the sound should be the same with all plugs.

basically it ll split the signal so you can use a fx (like eq or compression for example) on the middle or the side of a sound(or both with different settings ).

try a search on kvr forum you ll find some good informations i guess.
