There are some pretty good movies around here.

First of all the classic mexican cinema of the 50's which can give you an excellent portrait of stereotipes on this country. The best director in this genre is El "indio" fernandez

Comedy: There are two very talented comedians: Mario Moreno "cantinflas" and Tin tan, both are great, they used improvisation while filming. The problem maybe is that the jokes are too mexican and use lots of tricks in spanish.

Historic: there are few good historic movies about mexico, but one I can recomend is called "La otra conquista"(the Other conquest) which shows the spiritual conquest suffered by indigenous people by the spanish invaders.

Political: recently after the authoritarian regime collapsed political movies got pretty popular some I recommend:

La ley de herodes (the herodes LAw).- It narrates the story of a politician who is send to govern a little town which is very veyr poor, and how even when he had no bad intentions in the beginning the conditions turn him corrpt. Its a very hilarous movie. O te chingas o te jodes

Todo el poder(all the power).- It shows how the police and organized crime are onthe same side of the coin, the impotence of citizens. The story is about a men who seeks justice, making fun of the system.

El violin.- a movie that denounce the current low intensoty represion in rural mexico. An ederly man, who has only one hand, still plays the violin and tries to overcome brutal represion by troops.

Fantasy/science fiction.- the best mexican director is of this genre, Guillermo del toro. Known best by his award winning "The Labyrinth of the Faun" he had good movies in his past specially his first one "Cronos" and later "El espinazo del diablo".

Jodorowsky produced his movies in Mexico from "El topo" to "La montaña sagrada" very psychedelic movies IMO.

Contemporary.- in later years there have been good productions, some of them:

Y tu mama tambien(and your mother too).- tells the story of two teen agers who travel with a mature woman for some vacation on a virgin beach, in the road they wil confront their friendship meaning.

Amores perros.- a car accident interconects tree different stories, each one about people suffering their own harsh life. Direction is superb.

Amores Perros is a real cool movie. I second that one.

And Cantinflas is genius comedy, master of improvisation with out even trying. But if you are not Mexican or at least from a latin american spanish speaking country you probably wont get it too much. Though Chaplin once said he was the best comedian in the world, so maybe he got it.
