hi,
besides psy im also listening to metal.
my questions regards the low end mixing, equalizing and stuff.
i was wondering why its even working.
in the faster metal songs there is a double kickdrum blasting 16ths, a bassguitar (which seems to play even when its overlapping the kickdrum, since sidechaining isnt possible live) and then theres the e-guitar which also plays often low powerchords. all at the same time.
how do they combine these 3 elements in the bottom range? im already having trouble keeping kick and bass in psytrance clear
a little example for ppl who are not so into metal: http://www.maythesilencefail.com/may.php?sec=music song: the reckoning. right after the small intro it smashes in will full force |

i don't know metal enough to provide you with some tricks...
i just want to tell you...that side-chaining compression can, and sometimes is used in live concerts....
simples as you routing the elements to the SC Compressor channel.... you do it live..routing for instance an organ and the the main vocal...to the mixing desk...and SC both... (you should provide proper compressor config, before the show of course

a lot of metal kicks have really less lowend but a lot of high-mids. kill a lot of lowend and boost about 4khz to get this kind of 'typwriter' kickdrum.

the way i hear it the kickdrum doesn't go that low and the bass sits beneath the kick in the frequency range (and is very far from the fat bass we have in psytrance; in fact i can barely hear it on the speakers i'm on now). and the guitar doesn't have much low frequency content at all compared to the fat riffs you hear e.g. in doom metal, where there's no 1/16 kickdrum taking up mix space most of the time.
i cannot guarantee the correctness of what i hear on this speakers and with my limited mixing experience, but would sure like to know if my assumptions are right
edit:
@seamoon
wouldn't the high mids of the kick interfere with and have to be notched out in the guitar? |

@ killik:
1.
the precision of the kickdrum is due to high levels of its mid-highs, 4khz to 6.5khz
the bass usually contains most natural low and lowmids 150hz to 500hz
now, you can't compare the character of a rock/metal kickdrum with an electronic genre one.
a rock/metal kickdrum contains a lot of frequency information that we'd normally cut out in a psy or break track in order to boost the lows and sub.
so in rock/metal kick and bass actually work together instead of fighting their way out.
diffirent eq is required in both kick and bass though, to have them slightly occupy a certain (different to each other) frequency range
eg. metal kickdrums usually have cool lowend (50-75hz) and cripsy midhighs, rock kickdrums sometimes like more meat for more real sound (80-250hz)
2. "how do they combine these 3 elements in the bottom range? "
(kick and bass were explained above)
the powerchords are:
-always highpassed to 200-250hz or higher
-twice recorded, panned hardleft and hardright
they fatness of the powerchords perceived actually comes from the bass which is usually playing the fundamental of the guitar chord.
@padmapani:
the midhighs of the quitars are left/right while the kick's are in the center.
ps.
1. i produce rock/metal/blues bands in my country for 4 years now.
2. all of the above are like basic laws. the 'always' ones apply to most occasions but as you all know, different material bahaves differently
