I had this idea to try and merge psy and euro within a track. So, it would be something like this:

intro -> psy section 1 (non-melodic) -> short psy-like breakdown -> psy section 2 (melodic) -> long euro-like epic cheesy breakdown -> typical euro release -> psy outro (somewhat lighter than the euro part, but still heavy)

Is that daft? If you don't think it's daft, how would you go about keeping consistency within the track?

cool idea.. experiment with it. let the creative forces flow. id bet u learn alot in general by doing it.

I did a progressive track a while back and made it sound like a dj was beat mixing two tracks together. Lots of fun, but i never really finished it. Maby i should           Ohh yeah. fiddle and boom. Ableton addict :)
Been here since October 14, 2008.

check out Crazy Astronaut..
its a Furious side project, not exactly what youre talking about but i think you may find it helpful as far as understanding how to keep it flowing throughout broad changes; particularly tracks 'Breakdown' 'Slam' & 'Rise Up'
..excited to hear some samples of your idea when you go for it

keep in mind that the track will only appeal to people who like both genres.

imho dramatic genre changes would only work in a track that has a quite "trashy" feeling from the beginning that makes you expect the unexpected . otherwise it'd kill the flow.

You did'nt had to create this topic.

Just create the track, make it work and then ask for opinions.

Dont you think?

Stay in peace.

...or New Age and Black Metal.
Oh, wait, that's what much of Dark Ambient already is.

Maybe seriously off-topic here, but what is IDM, anyway? I know what's written in Wikipedia, but it would be interesting to hear some real person's explanation or clips.

Whoever named that genre must have been one hell of a snob. He was probably too white even for white people.

I tried:

I've done that in the past. I'll post the old tracks pretty soon.

Psy DM? what's that? Psychedelic dance music? I think it already exists.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

I've heard the track and have to say that it works well but like Padmapani wrote:

That would probably work in my hometown where most people like both genres but I do'nt think it would be very well recieved in a Psytrance fest.

Why don't you forget genres and do freestyle trance?

Just mix in ideas and make them flow on the beat... that would be helpful in this psytrance creativity crisis.

Basically IDM = very technical, very creative electronic music which uses dance music elements but is not dance music.

IDM is distinguished from breakcore usually because IDM is more relaxed and melodic and breakcore is more harsh and frantic.

Classic example of IDM:

Note the extensive use of stutter/beatrepeat, snare rushes, weird effects, strange rhythm patterns, and otherwise unconventional everything.

It wouldn't be that big of a deal if it were made today mostly because all of those effects are rather played out now but it was very groundbreaking when it came out.

it's funny you bring this up. up here in canada the dubstep scene and psy scene share many a festival stage - but with little musical crossover (yet). i've had a nagging idea for a while to create some ~130bpm psychedelic trance with typical proggy sidechain bass, except with dubstep wobble.

actually, i'm working on a track now. will post when it's half-finished or so.
