I've seen so many posts on the forum equating melody with cheese or selling out and I'm curious as to why. About the only other sorts of music would you hear the same comparison are Metal or Industrial (interestingly both sorts of music with large young male following that define themselves by "their" music and how uncommercial it is).
Whats the problem with some melody?

I would say that theres nothing worse than obvious melodies you've heard a million times before - but surely a good melody is an intigral part of any sort of music.

I'm not saying every track has to have a sing-a-long tune - as you need the driving rythym to get lost in- but a melody in itself is a good thing - and thankfully seems to be making a bit of a comeback.

what do you all think?

John, i think that when its done right, nothing beats it... i also think that people here usually refer to cheesy melody not melody in general... unless its pure minimal or very boring progg, every track has melody, without having to sound like infected mushroom. everything is the right proportion in every part of life.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Hi John,

i also like melodys alot but a real comeback isn´t that what i want...

all is changing, we become older from day to day, from year to year are more possibilitys,
all is getting bigger - higher - newer,

i think the music that all people hear at the moment is an experience of the present and i like it alot too...

maybe in some years there will be future melodys with future beats... really want to hear it

time will come....BOOM

The weird thing about melodies in this scene is that if it's used in a trance track it's cheesy, and if it's used in an ambient track it's beautiful...

haha so true!

imo, we have a big lack of melodic tracks now. somehow, with the north european miniprog wave that came upon us, melodies became something inapropriate.
i believe that melodies, if used properly, can reach places that nothing else can.

I agree a good melody is important, but very few actually know to right a good one

There has been a very postive change towards tracks with more melody, look at the new proggi style developed in sweden, very nice melodies.           "Love is a way of life"

well, as a melody-addicted trance fan, i'm all for their return, but in fact I think they never left, u have to look in the right places mate
(take a look at my latest top ten to see what i'm talking about).

Protoculture is an upcomer with amazing melodies.

Human Blue is the all-time best in the field, and despite the very unfortunate theft of his studio, he's still at it.

Cosma was also a king in it - unfortunately no longer with us, but his new work is about to get released...

The Son Kite boys have been adding melodies to their tribal mayhem, and it's quite good!

The latest Iboga stuff is melodic as well - look out specially for Frogacult and Flowjob, their work is highly melodic and beautiful.

ZMA and Hercules my mate took a little turn down melody road, and will be releasing more melodic stuff, like Molecular (these boys are good) and Sun Control Species (highly talented aussie).

there's also new label Aeon, run by my friend Seth here in Brazil, whose first compilation is almost done and comprises some amazing melodies from Nuclear Ramjet, Yotopia, Tetraktys and more...

as u can see my friend, we're not alone in this world           the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist....

Yeap, couldn't agree more. Just listen to "Environmental Boogie" or the fantastic "Intercity". That's what melody is all about...

Carpe Diem = A latin phrase, it means: seize the day, eat and drink today because tomorrow you may die.           Its the vibe that matters.
