I don't think you're going to get a huge everlasting thread out of this, there are plenty of tips around the site, and there is no real answer.
My only input is that it helps if you play some instrument, even at the most basic level. Also helps if you've got a keyboard in front of you and you can jam along to the track, remembering which notes you hit, then do improvs on that.
If I'm bored or can't think of a melody, I stick the root note on every beat, then just move them up and down in the scale, see if I get any good movement, then fill in some notes between them. Stretch some notes.. maybe move the whole thing off beat.
Bingo. Instant melody. |

If you're good at sequencing drums parts, but not doing melody, try this:
Make a drum sequence in midi with Battery or something, and then delete battery and drop in a synth to play the notes instead.
There's a rhythm for you, now move the notes to follow whatever scale you're trying to be in.
I can't even believe I'm giving advice on this since I haven't made a decent melody in months |

Hmmm dunno i always did everything by ear. It helps to have a midi keyboard or synth so that you can jam on it.
If you like something you can record it & then add more notes or change them around into something more complex.
The idea of using midi drum loops is also good. Another way is to copy the pattern of your bassline & then move around the notes to develop a melody.
The best way would be to learn more about music theory, something which i want to do given enough time. You don't really need to go to music school for that though.

brasirc - I am helping. Im telling the only way I know how. Go to fucking school. (actually I have nothing against teaching urself composition by yourself)
Y dont u help? Write a nice tutorial which will help him make music that doesnt sound like it was made by a diletante?Fact is he needs to put in a number of years effort to figure it out for himself.
But instead ul tell him he doesnt need to, & he'll make well produced puke. well done. Class A job. |

well, im not writing a nice tutorial, simply because im on the "help needed" side of the table right now...
if the best help you can give is to go to music school...even tho if someone is asking something here...is prolly because he cant/doesnt want to go to a music specific school, that doesnt help much does it??
btw....as far as im concerned, a "fucking school" is where you learn how to fuck...

google search this untill u realy KNOW what it meens
scales , major , minor , petatonic , phyrigian , etc.. search for scales will lead to all kinds..
chords - how to build chord
chord proggression
practice instrument and use it .. midi keyboard , guitar (also midi/usb exist) , violin..... whatever to find the basics of the melody without stare at the sequencer

what I do is that I randomly insert notes in a playline and then edit it as I listen to the bet over and over again...
And yeah... Arpegiators ftw!! Melodies in easymode...
