obviously for proggressive its very minimal compare to other genres
and whatever you do try to make it more intresting the "yonatan hakatan" , some artists think 2 notes melody is something good but its not
in dark sometime there is no Harmony at all

good idea is to have the bass runnin like song and change keys but this is only working for part of the peaple          www.sattelbattle.com

Dark trace usually uses anti-melodies (google it).

I usually stick with 2 or 3 scales during a track, making them progress. Then I add chords where needed.

To create a melodie and most of my track I use my guitar. Then I just need to pass the notes to my computer.

Try to learn any instrument well.. Like that you can use that instrument to create (instead of trying to figure out how it works when you only want a riff).

And learn some music theory, it can help alot.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Harmonies in well made psy seem to be similar to popular music, however they seem to be mostly based around variations of minor scales. The flat 9th is important. also phrygian and harmonic minors are heavily used.
Badly made psy is mostly static harmony wise. When I say mostly, I mean that most psy artists have no musical education and have no idea about musical concepts other than what the "feel" to be good. Occasionally good artists also incorporate static harmony when they want to emphasize a groovy feel or just monotony and repetition. But mostly a static harmony is damning evidence that the artists has no clue.

Melodies are crafted to simulate psychedelic hallucinations, and simulate body motion degradation and auditory degradation during intoxication. i.e. stuttering, pitch bending, sharp stabs with reverb and delay etc.
Occasional simple bitonality and counterpoint are evident.
Goa style psytrance was very distinctive in that its melodies followed a repetitive up down up down contour. but thats the good old days.

There is link to an analysis of some famous tracks somewhere on this site. Try find it.

Most trance these days is comprised 90% of glitches and stutters generated by rearranging and processing samples.

popular music form is evident in psytrance made by experienced producers. Many well made tracks augment an ethereal atmosphere feel with unbalanced structures at appropriate points. Then again many others simply interrupt the flow and put in millions of breaks coz it seems cool and covers up the fact that they have no clue.

Y dont u analyse some classics?

well said bukboy!
and yes , the dominant scales in popular music such R&B is minor scales 7ths, 9's.. 9th

there is few methods to compose melodies.
1. randomly - create a midi bar ,press play and draw notes in random order until you get some melody.
i think 80% of psy is made with this method, but dont get me wrong, with this method you can make a good melody also.
2. one of the classic methods is singing the melody you want to compose. you can sing in your mind and play it keyboard or guitar until you get the melody you want.

and there is the talent thing....for example
Richard Wright (Pink Floyd) once said in interview how he composed "The Great Gig in the Sky"
he just played randomly on piano the first 3 notes....then he knew exactly what he gonna play after those 3 notes. this is a gift from god...you are just playing from your heart without thinking.

PS: if you already made a melodic bassline
just copy the bassline bar and paste in another channel. open synth and play. also you can use arp (1\8- 1\4 th)           www.myspace.com/aliasix

harmonies in psytrance is almost not existed this days.

good harmonyhomophony makers were Astral projection, Hallucinogen and other goapsy producers in the past.
because goa trance is multi layered music and melody dominated rather than bass dominated imho. there is main melody, base, pad chords, and other melodic sounds as accompaniment following the rythm !           www.myspace.com/aliasix

not really true.
harmony is the relationship between notes, while the bass is usually represent the fundamental note, the "heaviest" in the scale, create the sense of "home".
alot of the full-on psy is based on changing bass pattern these days.
changing bass - harmony progression.

for sure theres also lots of track with monotonic bass but still, different notes on top of the same bass note will create diferent feeling (harmony)
