No one is doing this for the ratings, not seriously atleast. Now.. In my opinion there are three big questions about life.
What's the meaning of life, the Universe and everything? 42
Where are we coming from?
Are we alone?
Now it might not be that big a deal for you. But for me, this goes way beyond finding the cure for cancer or aids or whatever. That's like peanuts compared to this.
So why not wait for them to "come" to us? It might be that "their" civilization has died millions or even billions of years ago. But that doesn't mean that the signs would dissapear. Now maybe they have selected one of those star trek policies that they expect others to come to them.. not the other way around.. who knows..
Or maybe "they" are just like us. They can't come here. We sure as hell can't go anywhere. Maybe never.. who knows maybe there is no "warp/hyperspace/etc" travell options.. maybe it's just impossible to reach other stars in any reasonable time.. Hehe, one could argue, that you know the answer (42) but ask the wrong question
It is indeed an important question though - I have the usual cheesy posters that say "I want to believe" in my room, and it would be infinetly cool to discover intelligent life somewhere. And juuust maybe we'll pick up some signal tomorrow, but I think not - the productive result of folding proteins is (in my book) way bigger and more imminently needed.
I think the biggest chance of contacting life somewhere else, is if we put it there ourselves. Quite a few great scientists have died in an early age - if we eliminate what is killing us, then science (also with regards to space-travel) will be very much helped.
If we pick up a trace of a civilization that died millions of "years" ago - what's the point? It would certainly answer "the question", but in much the same way that 42 answers the very same question. We will sit back with a very "Okay, so... That was that - now what?" feeling...
Then of course there's the possibility, that if we discover intelligent life, they'll wonder why we try to speak to aliens, instead of saving our own from dying, when we in theory have discovered how to avoid that. They will decide we are dangerous and exterminate us, since we are a plague to the ecosystems we inhabit - and to ourselves (a bit farfetched - I know )

We are doing rather well. Personally I haven't contributed much lately but I'll try to correct my behaviour

You don't understand... This is my only change to get back home...
By the way, prediction of protein folding? Nah... Don't you know that all models are wrong? (but some may be useful).
I'm at a crystallography lab, if you want proteins' structures just send the me crystal...
