I agree with the idea of removing anything that you can not hear. I'll move notches around until I find a spot where It doesn't sound like it's doing anything at all...then leave it there.

It's important to listen to everything except what you're changing.

Physically you may get more "signal" without EQ, but psychoacoustically it may be perceived as louder with EQ, but of course this depends on the sound and the EQing applied.

thank you for the tips guys i think that maybe perhaps we usually spend too much time thinking about how to get the best quality [or at least i do], when really, the thing that gives the best quality is not the eq, compression, or anything else but the Musical Base. I'm pretty certain on that!

Generally, you go through EQing phases as a producer:

Phase1(0 to 3 years) : Noob, you find an EQ tutorial and EQ every sound in atleast 5 places to add(punch, clarity, presence) or remove(mud, harshness), without actually listening to how much you're screwing up the sounds and the mix.

Phase2(3 to 5 years) : Intermediate, you realize that EQing the piss out of everything sounds horrible, and that it's sounds better to EQ little or not at all. You pretty much stop EQing altogether, and your tunes start sounding better, but not quite pro.

Phase3(5+ years) : Advanced, you learn to EQ only where it's needed, and usually in smallish cuts usually < 6db. You have a clear strategy for how each sound is EQed. You also realize that an individual sound sounding good when soloed, and sounding good in the mix are usually not compatible concepts. You generally opt to EQ the sound to sound best in the mix 95% of the time.
