Before going through this list of tips, a very large project in Cubase with heavy plugin and effects was peaking VST Performance between 70-80% for me. After following this list of tweaks, I'm now maxing at only 38%. That's amazing. 
Simply had to share this list of tweaks with everyone. I run a Dell Inspiron 9300 with a 1.6Ghz CPU and 1gig of RAM. I had no clue that WinXP was such a resource hog...but seeing is believing.
