here's where we can trade argument points with Mau and anyone else who is up for it without leaching off other people's topics, energy and creations

I'd like to start the ball rolling by asking people to what extent they think an artist should also be an entertainer, or if the two should never co-exist.

if you are a dj or a performer this means to what extent would you tailor your set to the audience or whether you would play solely for yourself and if others like it so be it.

I think it's not either/or as much as it is a sliding scale. Where on that scale depends on the individual. I'd suggest that most artists/DJs lean (in varying degrees) towards the wider recognition and attention that catering to the crowds brings. Probably because they want at least some return (financial/social) for their work. Watching my sister (who is a relatively well known performance artist) spend her life creating really abstract pieces that only a very small handful of people might "get" shows me the other side of the equation. She loves the idea of art created as a type of unique expression that exists for it's own sake. Neither is wrong. It all depends on the person in question being true to themselves and their goals.

Techmonkey indeed it is as you say...

Mau... this is your dedicated zone - you've earned it, and that is a kind of recognition in itself. Nobody else has their own topic.

Why are you so abrasive with people ? I know there's the fluffy hippy Mau in there somewhere - you should let him out to play sometime. I'm not talking about relentless positivity, just baby steps...

I don`t know, why to make so much "noise" about maux ... why not letting him be, like he is ... what`s the positive effect of all this?

I like the topic raised above, though not the thread itself. I don't think he earned it.... on the contrary.

For me art is created in the meeting point between the artist and the audience. For me a DJ is someone who can channel the energy he receives from his crowd (and surroundings) back to the crowd through the music he plays. So yes, I tell my story, but not for myself only, and my listeners and my contact with them are an important part of my story.

Interesting responses and thanks for sharing your views...

my question should not have been either or...

I agree Shahar - but it is not his art that brought this thread about...

The only explanation from him so far is that he has a need to "speak his truth" that seemingly overcomes all other considerations.

Gaudi did a lot to help Mau when he arrived in London - I remember a number of things that were very hospitable at the time - lend money, place to stay, use of studio, introductions.

I am not suggesting that this means Mau has to like Gaudi's music or speak positively about it if he doesn't... just bearing witness to the wider context.

uh ?
sorry...I was too busy doing rehab to partecipate to this awesome topic.

tnx for the counseling Andrew...my heart chakra is warming up....I feel it...the light is filling me up.

you are sneaky tho (and a bit patetic too)...
Gaudi did help me (ye...he drove me around with his Jaguar...he also borrowed me 50£...and I been sleeping in his lounge too...and using is studio too when I was house sitting for him)

what is the matter ?
(unless you are Gaudi ghost writer here...I hope not)

what is the goal of you saying that ?
(very personal and private infos if you ask me)

many other ppl helped me in the past...even much more than Gaudi....so what ?
(I slept in many on many sofas during my gipsy life)

I always offer my help when I can.

I am not asking in change to praise any bullshit I do.
I really appreciate when ppl are nastly honest about my output...even mr Chlorophil.

Me and Gaudi know eachother from nearly 30 years...he knows my humor and my "sarcasm" enough I reckon...
he knows that I can't refrain to say what I think.
and anyway I did my part in promoting his new output as I can with my teenager ways.
so far I didn't need any diplomat in the middle to deal with him...
tnx for the effort Andrew...but you digging a hole here just for yourself.

everybody is the house...now...one minute of silence please.

ps. if you get lucky they will chuck me back in jail and I will not bother you anymore.

NO (more) PRISONERS !

Reading between the lines here, the question might be why some people behave a certain way on the net? In this case I think part of the explanation is in the need of attention. I found some information. See below.

Some examples of attention seeking:

-the man who complains loudly in a restaurant so that everyone will notice
-the girl who wears the skimpiest of outfits on a cold winter night
-the mother who sighs loudly and crashes the dinner dishes about so that the family will hear that she's a martyr to domesticity

Styles:

-Extroverted positive overt style - associated with narcissism, bragging and boasting. May also include shocking exhibitionist behavior such as streaking.
-Extroverted positive subdued style - similar but more subtle such as wearing designer clothes, wearing sexy clothes or dominating the conversation.
-Extroverted negative overt style - to gain pity and reassurance.
-Extroverted negative subdued style - making a negative statement to the world by, for example, dressing as a goth, freak or punk.

More:
-Personality disorders - A sustained pattern of attention seeking in adults is often associated with, in particular, histrionic personality disorder , but it may instead be associated with narcissistic personality disorder or borderline personality disorder. The expression drama queen is associated with histrionic behavior.
-Self-destructive behaviour - It is a common misconception that self-destructive behaviour is inherently attention seeking, or at least that attention is a primary motive. While this is undoubtedly true in some cases, normally the motivation runs much deeper than that. Many self-injurers are very self-conscious of their wounds and scars and feel guilty about their behavior leading them to go to great lengths to conceal their behavior from others.
-Voluntary false confession
-Münchausen syndrome
-Münchausen syndrome by proxy
-Münchausen by Internet

oohh...now we have the psychologist here..

I would go for the Don Chicote and Sancho Panza syndrome...fighting against the windmills of ignorance.

what about the PKS syndrome ?
(tnx google)

Pallister-Killian Syndrome :
Patients with Pallister-Killian Mosaic Syndrome typically have low muscle tone at birth, sparse scalp hair at birth, a high forehead, a coarse face, an abnormally wide space between the eyes, a broad nasal bridge, a highly arched palate, a fold of the skin over the inner corner of the eyes, and large ears with lobes that are thick and protrude outward, crossed eyes (strabismus), joints that will not move (contractures), and delays in perceiving, recognizing, judging, sensing, reasoning or imagining (cognitive delays) and an abnormal opening in the anus.

Good one:) Although you went for the looks instead of psychological syndromes I have. But it's spot on, especially the abnormal opening in the anus:)

Would you expand on this? It almost sounds like you are saying that people who like music that has any traits of being popular/cliche/derived/etc are exhibiting ignorance and need to be educated.

Hey Mau... just calling you on it that's all. I've not seen any sarcasm in what you said or how you said it.

But tell us - when you create or perform, do you consider your audience ? Do you think art should entertain, or should this just be a happy accident if it does...

And in all sincerity I hope that you are not incarcerated again in OZ... instead I wish you happiness, love, creative satisfaction, abundance, ripe mangoes, good health, freedom and liberty...

(tarataratatadan)

shame I haven't got a new album to promote...this thread is a killer of audience...and so famous firms of this forum contributing to it.
(andrew...what a score...any increase in viceversa sales ?)

Techmonkey ask to me to expand my Don Chicote syndrome...Andrew ask questions about my creative philosophy...PKS diagnostic me..
and I-O tells me off...

I am puzzled

mango season is off already (I don't like mangoes anyway....too sweet...I like bitter stuff...as u know).

I am picking up avocados this days

Gunter make more sense than anyone else really...
why so much noise ?

I know I know....it's because you all loooove me...
love is in the air...lalalaalallalaaaa...

I am healing....rehab is working sooo good...

now some answers...

techmonkey....read the Don Chicote book...lots of insights in it.

@Andrew
I don't do art...i think that art sucks...and it is corrupted till the bones and that most ppl who call themself artists are master wankers.
(just another of those IMauO opinions that makes you suffer)

and about entertainment...it is making ppl dull...I do not make music to entertain...I write on this forum to entertain.
(myself for a start)...

everybody in the house...NOW...repeat with me :
should I stay or should I go ?

(ok ok...hold your tomatoes and rotten eggs....I go..I goooo.....very soon...don't worry...I promise...I go...forever)
