ok. now i'll finish the "mixing up two threads" scheme...
but as this is the herbert topic i'll continue here about electronic bigbands you
were talking about in the flanger topic
the matthew herbert big band : goodbye swingtime, rel. 2003 on accidental
www.magicandaccident.com
one of my favourites at the moment combining
bigband jazz vibes with electronic fiddling.
and in what way! when you casually listen to the album you think it's just swing but if you really listen to it then it's a different story with odd bleeps here and there, writing with a filt tipped pen, slight re arrangements and skips and crackles etc. matthew herbert combined his forces with about 20 musicians ranging from the big band players to vocalists such as jamie lidell (super collider!) and fellow producers such as andi thoma and jan st. werner (mouse on mars!) to provide us with this stunning album. "goodbye swingtime" is superbly written, produced and making a point. it's well worth your time reading the sleeve notes because then you understand how complex and meaningful the whole is.
oh, and yes... i recommend it
