well here is the deal, i think that , i know more or less how thos a Synth works, Waveforms, filter´s, LFO´s, Envelop´s and so on, but what i stiill don´t understand is the matrix modulation, i (think) have a small idea- it´s a sort a combination of varios parameter´s , witch able´s you to control a parameter with another?

so any coment´´s??

is it very usufal?
what kind of advantege e effect it allow you to have\do?

thanxs

modulation in a matrix format. not synthesis, but a way of organizing the paramaters. matrix=tabular           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

For example here is a simple 2x2 matrix:

............. |cutoff|pitch.|
......LFO1|..127.|.... 0.|
......LFO2|......0.|.127.|

LFO1, LFO2 are the Modulation sources here.
Destinations are cutoff and pitch.

LFO1 modulates the cutoff periodicly between 0 and 127.
LFO2 does the same with the pitch.

Both examples assume that your destination is set to the value zero. Other case you cand add 127
Got it ?

Yes the modulation matrix allows you set parameters to modulate other parameters. It's a handy way of collecting all the modulation things in the same place. Another variant of the matrix looks like this:

Source:.....Amount/Depth:....Destination:
LFO1............45.....................Filter Cutoff
Velocity........18.....................Main Volume

So LFO modulates Filter Cutoff by 45 and Velocity modulates Main Volume by 18.

Can Jiva or someone else Please explain this a little further. In lay man terms.

LFO modulates filter cut-off by 45 (????) what?? what is that 45? ms? or high or low the wave moves?

well i think i get it...

i m able to control the filter cut off and lfo speed in the same "knob"---right?
is this exapmle correct?

Source Amount destination
filter cut off "100"-128 lfo speed

thankxs guys

There is no strict rules how modulation is implemented, but many times the amount of modulation is directly added to the modulation target when presented as midi parameters (0-127).

So if you have setup your filter cutoff to 60 and you modulate it with LFO1 with depth of 45, the cutoff will vary between 60-45=15 and 60+45=105. How those numbers translate to frequencies in Hz is up to the implementation. The output of LFO is usually between -1...+1. Formula for the cutoff would be something like:

cutoff = base + lfo1(t) * depth, where t is time meaning that the value of lfo and thus the value of cutoff depends on time.

Nowadays many VST's use actual numbers instead of "midi numbers", which allows more intuitive display and more accurate values.

Hope this helps...

'knob' in the sense of one parameter. can use one source like a knob to modulate several parameters, or a modulator, like LFO to modulate several parameters.

in a hardware synth, for example, there maybe be several pages, and places where you can insert modulators (LFO, envelopes, etc), the matrix ties them together in one easy to see spot. check out albino 2 or 3, has a great modulation matrix. I think some freewares, like Crystal have a modulation matrix, too           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!
