so my friend is giving me a super good deal on a new pair of krk rokit 5s (100$). my main monitors are the Hm80s.
with the little setup i hope to get into surround sound production.
question being this: how much is it going to effect my mix to be messing with different kinds of monitors? |

Even if there were the same pair of monitors, the fact of placing them in different places in your room is going to change their sound.

so it's not really going to matter about the speakers for basic work, but for precision mixing and mastering, it'll be an issue then? |

Use the best 2 speakers(or hopefully3) for your front L and R setup, and the shittier ones for C, Ls and Rs.
Make sure your setup is weighed properly (c weighted). The same speakers would be better, but it should not be a big issue. What I would do is to mix stereo first (with sub) to get the overall mix right and then pan ;-) This way you will be clear on your sound quality, once you start panning.
Have fun !
