We like our music to sound good, yes? As good as possible? Then the answer is yes, you want your stuff to be mastered. However, one of the tricky things is deciding at what point do you feel your stuff is ready to be mastered...or at least when do you feel like the track is good enough that you will pay money to someone to make it better.

yes agree man, after it depends ,cause in the end you re the only one that know what sound you are aiming for ,it s ever you find someone that print that sound to your track and you re happy or you print it yourself if you can archieve it (and have the tools for it) ,it s a lot about personal taste .i see mastering just the icing on the cake , crap in crap out .

This forum has more opinions on mastering than you can shake a stick at. The process of mastering is more complex than just slapping on X chain of effects. The tools used are very program dependent so it´s hard for me to lay out the perfect recipe for self mastering. As i see advice ranges from the useful to the idiotic every time someone asks about this. A good way to get yourself aqquainted with this process is to read "mastering, the art & science" by bob katz (i am sure it can be found as a pdf somewhere) this is for me my go to reference if i have any questions. Also the mastering forum @ gearslutz has some pretty heavy hitting members with more information to give than can ever be had here on that particular subject.
I started mastering myself because i only got decent masters back from one guy. The rest all changed the way my music sounded in very abrasive ways (this includes people who has done it for many years even, tho all coming from within the psytrance microcosm)

That led me to thinking i might be able to do a better job myself, and by golly i can. Even just using software....Now the softs i use cannot just be had for free so it has taken some investment to get on a comfortable level working inside the box. In the start it was only for me but i realized i am not the only one suffering from heavy handed axing of my music and started offering my services to a wider circle of people. In time some neat outboard gear may seep into my labs, but i am trying to find money for truly high-end speakers, so everything else is kind of secondary atm.

btw monno i don t know much your music but man some tracks i heard of you i really enjoyed your production taste !

I have this book kicking around somewhere because I've heard SO many people recommend it, but upon reading the first bit of the book I found that the bulk of it was so archaic and outdated sounding. he talks about everything as if you've recorded a band, amongst other old school concepts.

I will take another look at it though, because maybe I just wasn't mature enough for the book when i first picked it up.

well archaic and outdated it might look like, but the information presented in that book is still very much relevant! (there is a second updated edition in print btw) The techniques used has not really changed a lot in the past decade, only the equipment used. It does not tell you exactly what to do, but it does tell you a lot about mastering and what it actually does. Finding the perfect recipe is up to the person behind the helm. That answer cannot be had in anyway except trying to do your best with the tools available. Mastering is different from genre to genre, but the processes applied remain the same.           Mastering available here:

some people say here that mastering can ruin or literally change the track's initial spirit.. that's true in a certain way.
but there's should be a dialog between the artist and engineer.

many people are doing internet track submition to do the mastering.. and just attach a little text info if so

the oposite happen too , guy don t trust and want to make own mastering and at the end all the other tracks in the va getting some good analog processing and well done mastering have a more pleasant sound.

one time i got a track mastered by a guy that master some dark stuff and man , it was sounding like pure crap rofl , i made a better mastering in less than 5 minutes...in this scene it s really not talent it s connection cause th guys master lot of tracks, or they are deaf dunno or maybe he was in a bad day , that can happen..

i not always trust other
my mastering is ok , there is better`and much worse
in this scene if you release with not so big labels they aint gonna pay that much for mastering usually and with what they come up with i prefer my own job. all that said when i like tim shuldt work and its not expensive at all.. there is deep relation to why more commercially successful music sounds better then underground. through all stages from source to process to mastering..           www.sattelbattle.com

If i would spend money on mastering i would triple check the studio of the company and i don't care if they are from the scene or not.
Mastering is a very technical thing and should be done in a proffesional enviroment by a proffesional, not less. The big issue lies in the topics name. Most of the people don't know what it is and how it should be done. Therefore there are a lot of crappy quality CDs.

Bottom line ---> Get a sample check it before paying.

If you want to learn mastering well then go learn somewhere.IN A FORUM is not a perfect place. You can learn only very little about it like that.
