I have some questions about mastering:
+ how much is a reasonable price for a good mastering of a whole cd (about 60-70 min)
+ i know, that lables want unmastered versions of the track.
but if i have the tracks already mastered (not by myself, but from a professional mastering studio) do they have the same chance to be released, would the lable be happy about having less work or would they remaster it anyway.
i know, that this will probably depend on the lable, but maybe you have some advice for me.

It really depends what kind of mastering applied and what kind of taste label manager have! Basically if it's full CD mastering which done well then label will thank you much for doing it's job for yoursels.
Mastering vary from 400-1000$ for semi pro mastering for whole CD. |

I don't know about other people, but I charge £50 GBP per track, with a negotiated discount for larger projects.
As for your second question, one of the tasks of mastering is to make an album sound 'coherent' - to make all the tracks fit well together. This can be difficult because everyone's studio has a different sound, and getting all the sonic fingerprints to sound like they come from the same hand (if you see what I mean) is an interesting job. That's why, even if your track has been mastered by Bob Katz himself, the label still might want an unmastered version.
However... if your track has been mastered very well indeed, there is always the chance that the label will choose it as the 'target sound' for the whole album; this has happened to me a couple of times with my Voice of Cod tracks, where my own mastered version has been used on the CD, and the other tracks have been mastered to match it. It's very flattering! This is why, if you do have a mastered version, it's a good idea to send this to labels as a demo - as long as you make sure that they know you also have an unmastered version should they need it.

In order to obtain the better results from the mastering process we mix both digital and analog technology and work with experienced sound engineers.
