For me ....
The best in the business for full on style are:
Domestic , Shulman
for more techy/proggy style:
Son Kite without a doubt
And for more dark psychedelic:
Xenomorph.
these are respectivly the best in each diff style in my opinion. Ofcourse there are masters like dado and astral projection ( i think they are the only ones who do analogue mastering in our scene)
and then ofcourse there are all the professinoal mastering studios for film and music mastering .
thats what i think atleast. aiiiiight

This one is the best.
http://www.heathmans.co.uk/
Stuff from Touching Bass (probably the best sounding Dragonfly compi) to the Plump DJs, to Whitney Houston, to Underworld, to Dr DRE has been mastered there.
Shane is the guy you want to master your tunes. He can cut a good 12" too!
Peace.

Violet Vision's second album was mastered there by Mike Marsh. This studio is perhaps the best in the world for Electronic Music.

I don't think there is much point in listening to individual artists because it is very hard to tell the difference between the mixing and the mastering. I reckon the best way to judge is to listen to compilation CDs with different artists. This way you can get a feel for the mastering and how the engineer has pulled the tracks together sonicly (or not).
Having said that, although I do some mastering for TV, I don't ever look at who did the mastering on psytrance CDs unless there is a serious problem. And even then, I usualy can't be bothered to find the jewel case for the CD.
An example of mastering problems is TIPWCD022. Listen to Sub6 - Indian Jackpot. There is a horrible resonance at arround 16Khz (judging by my ears) that should have been removed by the mastering engineer. I know it is part of the way the sample is treated but still. This is useless and very unpleasant at high volume. This is a pitty because it is a very nice track.
The Beat Bizzare track sounds like it is a 96Kbit mp3. This also has very sharp sounds in it but that might be the mastering engineer's attempt at making the best of a badly produced track.
Some tracks on the album are a few dB RMS lower than others and the tone isn't consistant. I don't mean to pick on this CD in particular but it illustrates some of the problems of mastering quite clearly.
I don't know who mastered this CD because the jewel case is buried away somewhere. The CD says "Impress" but I reckon that is the pressing plant.
So what am I ranting about anyway? I don't know. I think I need a smoke.

mastering is a very important to good track production... but I do see what many of you have posted about with the ratios. I hear compressions that tend to be real heavy and with low release which causes that kind of suction like sound when I break comes. This grates on my nerves. I hear this esp on Mix compilations more than on produced singles... |

There's some other artist-people into mastering:
-Phantom production (Authentik)
-Dj Bog & Uriel
-Eargear
-Dado
-Metronome
-Erez (nobody mentioned him upto now i think , strange no?)
-Artifakt
Otherwise i don't have special preference for the 'masterer'.

I am going to have to disagree with this statement.
If there is a horrible resonance, it should have been taken care of by the artist. If it wasn't removed there, then it should have been taken care of when the track was being mixed down. The mastering engineer can work a lot of magic with tracks, but there is only so much they can do.
However, if the mastering engineer introduced the sound, then it is completely his responsibility.

imo the all too crystal clear sound destroys the punk-vibe.
the best, of course, is very clear mixing of distorted punk/ trashy soundz (like parasense, x-dream, tim schuldt etc.).
otherwise, polished music is POP
keep the dirty acidic twisted vibe in goa/ psy!!!

Shpongle, almost everything from Twisted.
Digital Structures, Son Kite, Ticon and Pope of Gegga.
Rest of the words Undertow have said already in better way. I would add X-Dream's new album as well to crappy album mastering. |

Personally I feel a lot (not all) of the labels in psy are starting to fall victim to a problem that has been plaguing the mastering community for awhile now, know as the loudness race. exactly !
imho doing a proper mastering is a real sound engineer job, not every trance musician is able to do a real fat mastering
only very few people in this scene really knows how to make a really fat mastering without distorting the original sound...
i m thinking about son kite , triptych , space cat also does some very nice pro mastering, dado, ololiuqui ,ear gear , phantom prod and many others professional studios...

What you call mastering isn't mastering. To make tracks same volume and eq doesn't mean to make track which is low volume louder but to find optimal volume and equalisation for whole CD. Do not blame sound technicians for horror of over compression found in fullon scene. Listen to Massive Attack music, their volume is more than any fullon producer but it never lost dynamic range or naturalness. Meaning, some know to master and other know less. To flatten mix with limiter every one can but to keep it natural and moving it is an art. |
