ah i see, well normally is good thing to use saturation for that purpose ...but yes ssl compressor has real silky characteristics and by using it correct (not to much) it's makes mixdown still acceptable for the proper mastering

Ofc not to much =) like i said a maximum of -3dB reduction and a 30ms attack and auto-release and a 4:1 ratio.
I also have been experimenting with some of the tape-simulators on the market, like the Am-track from magix and the voxengo tapebus emulator, at the moment im mostly satisfied with the voxengo simulator. But i sense that the Am-track has alot of potential when used wisely =)           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

When mixing you have to ask yourself this question: Is the compressor on the stereo bus there for the sound or to make things louder? If it is there for the sound, it is cool. If it is there to make things louder, it is best left to the mastering engineer.

Am-track? Hmm...never heard of that one, but with Voxengo you can achieve very nice results, also i recommend PSP MixSaturator or if you have possibility to mix with Pro Tools than AC2 is da winner

Here you have a link to am-track http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2685.html.
Hmm the mixsaturator you say ill check it out as well, so if you were to pass a judgment voxengo or psp, where do you put your vote? I guess it all depends on the character of the track but in general speaking.

As you mention Pro-tools, there is this tape saturator as well, id love to try this one http://www.crmav.com/recording/24/digidesign_pro_tools_reel_tape_plugins_mixing_digital_record.shtml          Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

Thanx for the links, looks interesting.
Well psp and voxengo both very good quality tools, it's hard to say who is better...as you say already: " it all depends on the character of the track". Buuuuutt psp a bit more analog to my ears
