good luck with it all!
we should do a shootout at some stage (mastering the same source track and comparing the results privately). i've found it very educational and informative in the past. after all, our clients are doing this all the time.

i have something else in mind
since mastering own tunes isnt a really good idea it would be nice to have a pact to master other mastering engineers' tracks for free

that would be fine if the client was ok with it. we could all have a go. i have a friend who makes IDM who would probably be up for it. next time he sends me a track, i'll ask his permission, and if he says yes, then i'll pass the source track on to all you guys too.
i often do this over on the R/E/P mastering forum, where they have a "WUMP" competition once or twice a year. all the mastering engineers have a go at the same track, then we write comments on everyone else's master, and tell everyone exactly what we did to the track and why. it's been very educational, and i'll often get tracks in a style i'm not used to mastering (such as soft rock or indie rock), which is a great learning experience.

i've done it with colin before (it was an OOOD track), me, him and and another pro place in the uk (i forget which...), a few years back. it was very helpful for me at the time, as i think it was the first time i'd mastered a psy tune, and being out of the scene for so long, i wasn't really sure what was required. i seem to remember mine came out way too quiet compared to the other two.
with the WUMP, we've found it most successful when critiquing everyone else's masters to try and concentrate on the positive aspects, and offer truly constructive criticism/feedback. otherwise it's easy to devolve into bruised egos and pissing contests...
i probably won't get a track from my IDM mate for a while, as he's on holiday at the mo, but will forward it when i do (with his permission). meanwhile, if someone else wants to submit a track...
it's good as we can all learn from each other. information wants to be free and all that.

man, lots of people are trying to do that with lack of understanding why is mastering needed in the first place... just applying L2 or similar processor to any mix and call it a mastering!
especially it is bad when the people don't really understand how the music sounds like, what it means, where it comes from etc; with and without electricity involved.
where it starts and where it is heading.
mastering is not an enhancement, nor improvement, nor digital editing.
sorry but most of the studios sell services mentioned above.
