Hi!
I have been trying and trying to get my tracks mastered with different programs like voxengo soniformer & elephant and also the waves L3, C4 and Rcomp.
But I seem to have trouble getting my mid and high levels up so they will peak. The bass and the lowermid peaks from time to time, and some of the mid and high comes up to about say 20 -50 % when I check the mix in my wav player, winamp or windows media player.
All my original cds Ive bought they peak all the way in the freq area, and they are also quite loud, without the high frequencies getting to loud and painful to listen to.
I have had some success in getting the peaks on the mid/ high up but then I got a result of about 4 in rms and the mid/high was painful to listen to, and the bass was flat and boring.
I would love some help/tips on how to master the tracks a bit better! Any1 of you had similar problems, I would love some advice!
Thank you!

Spend more time sorting out the mix.
If the mix is good to start with, you should have no problems getting it nice and loud with a bit of limiting. It sounds like that is not the case with your tunes.
And carefull with maximisers, they shred the sound completely when over used.

beware of too short attack time, this will strongly affect the transients.. |

mix better, try making the track look maximized when it's just mixed (except for the RMS of course) then mix it. i personally use the PSP VintageWarmer + L2 combo. |

First of all, thank you so much for the advices!
I have tried to remix the tracks but with just a little more high frequencies. Now it looks like something like this:
------------------- top line
-----
------------
-------------------- bottom line
in winamp after I have mixed it down again. the mix sounds fairly ok at about 11 rms, but still I cannot seem to get the higher frequencies boosted enough.
I wonder if I send the tracks to mastering at some studio, do they run the music through some hardware that makes this easier or do they all use waves or something?
Would love to have the tracks running at full frequencies at all the spectrum.

oh I mean the spectrum in winamp looks like this:
------------------- top of spectrum
------
bass
----------
Mid/treble(and missing the highest)
------------------- bottom of spectrum
as you can see the bass is full freq, but the rest is not so full :/ |

oh-psychedelic, frequencies in spectrum are not supposed to "peak". The frequencies at high end of the spectrum are always quieter than the bass end. There is a thing called pink guide or something like that, which can be used as a guide for setting the eq for a track (see izotope's ozone). In that guide there is a -3dB/oct slope after certain mid frequency... If I remember correctly it should present common freq curve of modern releases. Don't know how it can be fitted to psy, though.
I'd rather use some other tool than the scope/spectrum of winamp to analyze the signal... It's meant to be esthetic, not informative.
Anyway, good luck with mastering. It's somewhat easy concept to learn and understand, but very hard to master (no pun intended )

Well, my problem was in reality, my concern over not getting all the freq. up on my finished track after mastering.
Latet realases like lethal doses and likes of that has all the spectrum of the winamp equalizer or any equaliser with peaks.
So, anyway, I solved this problem by using my coxengo curve eq in the mix before mastering also.
Now it is really much better and I can easily compare it with the released tracks.
So Im very happy |

hmm
many ways to master
each one use his own style at it..
as about any freq you want to "push" up -so just high it in the channel in the mix.remember the high freq is allways can heard more than low-low you feel-high you hear.for my opinion no need to take the high to his pick-it will hurt in the ears of the listeners...as about that you see fat wave -in all freq-so that mean after mastering with the right things to do.(not allways that say that it is a good sound btw)
the best thing is to work more on the mix at first..than to try and maximize it and compress etc...
cheers
