waves L2 is what i use also...
if i want to give small boost to my final mix in order to play it... It has a nice preset "premastering" something...
But i think u better not use maximizers or any kind of compressors before u send your trax to labels.

Not everyone want to send tracks to a lbel CHP
Normally i just use L3 Ultramaximiser for making my track really loud, the mix is normally ok so i don't use eqs, stereo widening nor harmonic exciters.
But if u want to use this take a look at iZotope Ozone, it is a killer mastering program, sometimes i like to use it too.

A great Mastering (in order):
1)Waves X-Noise
2)Waves L2 (just to cut a little the peaks) use this key -> [<>] (in the center of plug)
3)Voxengo CurveEq for equalizing
4) OtiumFX Basslane (free) (kick power) (optional)
5)Voxengo Warmifier (optional)
6)Stereo Enphasis
- Waves Stereo Imager
- Stereoexpander (the best) - Wavelab plugin
7)Harmonic Exciters:
- Baxxpander (good free harmonic exciter)
- BBE Maximizer
- Izotope 3
8)Izotope 3 Mastering Reverb
9) Voxengo Transmodder (Broadband Magic presset) (optional)
10)Multiband Compressors/Expanders:
-Samplitude Multiband Dynamics
-Quadcomp (akai)
11) Voxengo Transmodder (S-smoother presset, with some ajustments - use your ear)
12) Voxengo Tubeamp (choose some presset)
13)Izotope 3 loudness maximizer is the best in my opinion
14) Voxengo Powershaper
Good mastering! |

wow ^^
i go like that (and its not pro master but if u have good mix it will sound louder and nicer for sure (also levels eqals to cd quality)
1.compress - c1,c4
2.eq - voxengoglisseq,Req6 - bbe maximaizer for bass loudness (poibble)
3.limit - l3
it can be intresting to check out previous post method
and question: l2/l3 makin also the dither from 24 to 16 bits.. aint that done as last thing since adding noise to it?

Tomasrangel, thnx for the list. I didn't know about some of those plugs
Be careful with using too many plugins in a row however. Every plugin will corrupt your sound a (tiny tiny) bit because every plugin works at a higher internal resolution and has to dither down to the resolution you're working at. If it's a few plugs placed in a row it doesn't matter that much, but if it's loads of them placed in a series, you will hear that you lose clarity and definition. |

Waow. That is alot of plugs in a row. A few comments:
1) If there is noise to remove, go back to the mixing stage.
2) I wouldn't limit this early in the chain. The relatively flat peaks hard limiting causes could end up anywhere after the next stages of processing including ending up at zero crossings (distortion) or in the side bands due to stereo enhancement later on (distortion and stereo image compromise).
3) CurveEQ is a very very nice tool
4) I think it is better to use something like this during mixing on a buss with your bass and kickdrum. (Personal choice I guess)
5) Nice plugin. I would put it later after multiband compression but I suppose putting it here means you are also controling the extra harmonics created by this plugin.
6) Stereo enhancing should be the last thing before hard limiting. All the following processes in your chain will affect the stereo imaging.
7) There are also some nice PSP plugins for harmonic excitation. PSP MixTreble is quite nice. But its better to fix the balance in the mix really.
8) Fix the reverb in the mix.
9) Increase transients, 10) compress 11) increase transients again. You are making your plugins work against each other.
12) More harmonic enhancement. I would personaly stick to one to get a cleaner sound. (Taste thing I guess)
13) I never use Izotope ...
14) I havn't used this but isn't it a distorion effect? All this kind of stuff should be added before final hard limiting. The distortion added by this plugin could easily pull you over 0dBfs.
Here is an example of a chain I might use in software (It changes each time):
1) General EQ (Voxengo CurveEQ / Massenburg / Oxford / Waves)
2) (Optional) Harmonic enhancement (Voxengo / PSP)
2) (Optional) Multiband compression (Voxengo SoniFormer2 / Waves LinMB)
3) (Optional) Transient enhancement (Waves Trans-mod / Voxengo GlissEQ (With high dynamics settings))
4) Stereo Enhancement (Wavelab / Waves etc)
5) Hard limiting / Dithering (L3 Multi / Elephant2)
Luckily I can do things at the studio I work at where the chain looks like this:
1) Massenburg 9500 (Mastering EQ)
2) Tubetech SMC 2B (Multiband valve compression)
3) Manley SLAM! digital (Dual limiter)
This beats any software chain I have heard.

I usualy put it before but there are no hard rules. Try both and see what results you get.

great tips undertow!! tnx
just want to add... Don't limit urself to the plugins mentioned here, we are spoiled for choice, and everybody has slightly different wants and needs, so u really have to check out what's out there to see what fits u best... Ofcourse, knowing what other people like makes the list much shorter when u have to start choosing... |
