hallo people!!
first of all i used the search about this topic but could not find it. Sorry if this has been discussed...
well i would like to know few things
which are the albums you think are really well mastered and why do you think so ( technical specifactions will be helpful)
which are the albums you think which have been mastered really bad and why do you think so?what what is wrong?
do you really think making it loud is necessary? ( i have seen this appeals more to people)or is it the label people asking for on the face mix
P.S- i remember seeing few of my questions have been discussed b4 but i cant find it..excuse me
thanks

One would have to have heard the unmastered versions of tracks in order to really tell if its the mastering that made sound great/bad.
Having said that I have not heard anything bad from Sonic Vista Studios in Ibiza.
Henry does the mastering for a lot of the Ibiza crew, which, tastes aside, sounds great.

agree with Nectarios .about making loud if you want your track loud and still sounding good, then it's 90% down to the mix not the mastering.
it s not uncomon to hear tracks that sound better when not mastered when it s level matched(by reducing the volume of the mastered one) but depending the speaker i m not sure the loss of dynamics is very noticeable, on small speaker (and maybe on pa?) the flat and loud version (even when a bit of distortion is noticeable)may win vs the one that breath better.

i have to admit... i love this high polished sounds, when every detail comes through...
i guess this depends basicly on the mix... but i made the experience that mastering can make a track more beautifull than it is already. i cant tell if this have something to do with loudness... but i guess so.

i think you could get the same thing hapening in your mix with more control as you re not restricted to a stereo file,i would not be surprised if it s more something like tape/tube/transformer color giving a more "expensive" "polished " sound (or plugins trying to recreate this ) that you like .
what really amazed me it s when i heard a mix that sounded nothing special, going into some pultecs , it was sounding like coming out of a big studio of the west coast instantly! sounded nothing specail to sound like a record...

Artifakt's masters aren't that loud - but they really add a new dimension to the mix. Dyl from Disasterpeace Mastering gets it nicely loud, consistent and crunchy, Shift's stuff is uber, uber fat in the low range. Guess it depends on the kind of sound you're going for. Mastering is an objective process with a subjective result, I think.
My recently released EP was mastered very well I think. It's the reason why I go back there for my upcoming ambient album. True, it cost me some $, but I have to say it is very well worth it!

I mastered our latest EP on Neurobiotic, so I'll post samples between mastered/unmastered when I can be bothered.

I'm quite fond of the mastering that Colin from OOOD does (for example, the Artha album) , as well as the Soundmasters...the people who mastered androcell's lastest album.

For the record, there was no "fancy" mastering process for the simple reason that everything I thought needed sorting out, I could address in the mix, as my number of stems was equal to the number of channels in the track. Did not want to make things too loud as they do tend to sound too squashed.
Did listen to a couple of masters from people who are professional mastering engineers, yet there was something I did not like in the sound...matter of taste and all that.
Anyhow the label was more than happy with the masters (they were my versions for playing out) I provided, so we just went with that.
