all this talk about plugins...... from the little i know most serious mastering engineers use hardware......
and as for mastering. what u need is a killer set of ears. a killer set of speakers. a good room. and about 2 tons of experience.
mastering is like the final polish on a fine diamond. but u got to cut it first if u cut it bad even the best mastering can`t save it.
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

i was just saying that no anyone can do a proper mastering process. and lots of ppl get the wrong idea about it. met quite a few ppl who`s idea of mastering was ... well i`ll just take the track eq it a bit compress it alot and ce`tu. a master is ready.
its not like that. and if u look into it u`ll see that most "big names" in the mastering field ususally have quite a few (actually more than a few) years of experience in mixing b4 they became mastering engineers.
thats all i was saying.

nolightatend,
That is true nobody can do "proper" mastering, I am begginner, and starting to learn that now through experience...
What he means by that is that everyone thinks that there is a set recipe to mastering, but in fact it is a process in which you use your intuition and not blindly follow the same process each time. Each event and track is unique and must be dealt with on a case to case basis. At the end, you can have two entirely different masters and they are both good.

I've read quite a bit into the subject but I learned the most when I sat down with the mastering engineer (shane at www.heathmans.co.uk) on a couple of sessions and realised the sort of gear and especially acoustics, a proper mastering suite has. My tunes get cut on vinyl so he was concentrating on getting things right for that medium.
The most valuable and controversial lesson I learned about mastering, is sorting out the mix. If that is sorted, the tune will sound nice and loud with a bit of limiting.
I don't do any mastering besides limiting the mixes that are going to get played out before the get sent to the mastering suite to get cut.

i think the "tools" are not everything that you need for a proper mastering. U need some proper mastering speackers and a good acousticaly environment that allows you to work with the sound.
