Hey all,

I am now reading an ebook purchased from
www.samplecraze.com
and bob katz's book on mastering

but I am kind of confused of which programs you need to master, and what Mastering entails...

Right now I am learning how to use EQ, and i'm learning using soundforge, i'm considering having wavlab too for that.

But what does the program "waves" do? Which are similar to this?
What does it do? how does compression fall in terms of all of this?
AHHH? ;-)

Can someone please direct me somehow? I'm just throwing myself at this anyways, but a little hint and direction would great!

thanks,
Ron

Waves is a brand of audio software and hardware. Their plugins are top quality, studio like, but also very expensive in terms of money and CPU... in a few words the most professional thing you can get

Not actually the most professional. At all. But the one that has the best cost/benefit.

Algorithmix EQs own for mastering. The best available.
Sonalksis for compression is also awesome...
Har-Bal pack is great too.

hey guys,

THanks for the reply.
I now know the options for mastering tools that are avalible, but I don't really know the steps of mastering in general. All I know is that you must compress, equalize when nessacary, mix, blah blah...
I know what these are seperate, but how do they combine in what we call "mastering"

Well i must say that i would agree that for a good mastering there is nothing like perfect room sound control (acoustics) and a pair of experienced ears sound engineer...

The better tools for sure!!!

Actually, algorithmix Orange EQ or Red EQ are the best vst equalization that is available. And its not because of its price, but because of how it works.
I suggest you read about it, how it works, then you'll know why.

Here goes a pretty lame question: Can the mastering software be used in the mix too? Like the Algorithmix EQ for instance? Or are they specially developed for mastering only? Don't diss me, I haven't reached that far yet

Frankly, if you don't know where compression fits into the whole story, I would forget about mastering for the moment and concentrate on general mixing techniques first. Bob Katz' book assumes you are familiar with all the standard audio processing techniques.

I'm sure people can recomend some books about mixing that might help you out.

As for Waves, others have mentioned that it isn't the best stuff arround ... by a LONG shot. It is seriously overpriced. Even Voxengo stuff at 1/10th of the price is usualy much better sounding.

Man.. this algorithmix EQ takes a LOT of cpu, so its practically impossible to mix with it.

Yea man, but what is heavy? I mean 40% CPU hog that plugin alone.

I cant mix my whole drums with it. I could use it for a single instrument, but it would be overkill. Its just like trying to laser-cut a bread.
