mastering for a BIG system?

So, all us american downtempo freaks are excited about the EXCELLENT news that the gemini 08 chillstage will have a 1500 watt sound system with 8 huge subs!!!!

but i suddenly realized that i've only ever played on your average chill system....you know, a little tent and a tiny generator or two powering maybe one or two subs.....or the back room of a club, with whatever speakers they didn't want to install on the main system. and my self-mastering always sounds pretty damn good on those systems if i do say so myself. I'm pretty comfortable with the way my studio translates to a little system.

BUT....8 SUBS?? it makes me giggle with anticipation, the thought of my music blasting out at 1500 watts, but the question is, should i do anything differently when i'm preparing the live set for this party??? cut the bass a little? set my compression or limiters a little stronger??? any advice from you big dog mainstage psytrance producers would go a long, long way. thanks!!

hehe i thought u said BIG SYSTEM

i dont get what kind of system of 1500 have 8 subs dude.. is that 1500 EACH ? (x8 now that would be BIG yeah)
since the smallest i ever played on was realy 1500 but usualy 8000 or 16000 and the biggest 50K!

and i dont change the sound before , since there is no 'balance' and also i was mixing mastered tracks but if you make live just have EQ on the channels and play with it and maybe learn something for future productions

1500 Watts? I think you are mistaken. I have 720 Watts in my studio. Did you miss a zero?

Anyway, in theory, the whole point of mastering is that it should translate well to any system including massive PA rigs. So no, you shouldn't do any more compression or limiting. On the contrary, if the PA has enough power, you can use less limiting and compression and just turn up the volume of the rig.

You might discover some bass issues that do not appear on smaller systems. If you are really worried about that, you could have a low-shelf filter ready to slap on your master bus to lower the low-end a bit if it gets out of hand. Or you might find there is a bit too much stuff in the extreme sub range. A hipass filter should take care of that. It doesn't need to be too steep. Just something to catch the very lowest sub-sonic junk.

But frankly, if your stuff sounds good on all the systems you have heard it on, it will probably sound fine on the bigger PA.

Of course, not having heard your material, this is all guess work.

hmmm i tend to feel there should be diffrent mastering for indoor and outdoor actualy

look at the fullon masters , they have milion $ sound in clubs but outdoor its usualy thin like some anorectic model... i like AIR and this makes huge problems in closed events.

BUT

there is a sweet middle yes. need some air sure but make sure its not gonna sound like one big Booooooooo (this what happend to me in first club event , lucky there was just about 10 people to rock)

tho if i would make radio edit for songs defintly would crush them less since they gonna pass throu harsh limiter and also will try to make it more mono capable since most people will listen in mono

as far as numbers go, i just report what the wichdokta tells me.
take it up with him and bluespectralmonkey if you feel the system is too small

thanks for the tips though.

I'll probably be connecting into a dj mixer, so should I just use the eq's on that to fine tune (that's what i usually do) or should i put a nice oxford eq on the master bus and tweak it with the mouse?

Well that depends on what kind of problem you might encounter and the EQ on the DJ mixer. (They usually have fixed frequencies which might not help with any particular problem you might encounter).

You could have the Oxford EQ ready but set to flat and start with tweaking the DJ EQ IF and when you encounter any problems. If the DJ EQ does the job (or there are no problems), you don't need to touch the Oxford EQ but it is nice to have it ready just in case.

If it sounds good on all systems, small and big, then it is mastered well.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

Yeah the dokta runs a sound company for his "other" living, so it should be good sound all around.

I'll be there playing as well, but on the psytrance stage, so I'll have to come find some of you guys and meet you if we can hear over the 12,000 watts of chill bass
should be fun!

Cheers,
