I need some tip... I'm working in Cubase (sometimes nuendo, i can't get my hands on Logic...), i use many audio channels (soon i will not have any other choise... all the synths going back to their owner :(), this is not the point anyway... Audio out (SB Live) connected to my Hi-Fi stereo (you know, the home stereos, something big but not good for music creation of course...), so the sound I get is very different when it played elsewhere (more professional stuff...). So, how can I get best results right now? (in the future I'm going to buy some stuff...) How can I improve the wavs that I inserting (let's say from fruity loops) ? To master it in Cubase? But I don't feel the change...
Guys, what do you think? I'm in deep shit? No way out? Also if you have some tips about mastering plugins or something write it down... thanks :) |

The truth? You cannot change wavs and not FEEL the change :) if you don't feel any change - then you are stuck my dear.
I think the only solution for you now is to listen to very good mastered tracks - and to try keeping your sound at their level...
This is REALLY not the best thing - but Monitors and High Level soundcard could help you alot :) BTW, don't forget to ZERO your Hi-Fi stereo EQ... so it won't filth the sound with the cheap EQ. Just 'as flat as it can be' - Narf.

Don't worry, I was like you once... SB 64 and shit AIWA system, but look at me now: Delta 666 sound card, Tannoy MX-3 speakers (I know it's not monitors but it's flat enough). Now I just have to find time to do something!... |

Man, you even dunno how i understand you. My situation is much worse than yours. I can make anything i want of melodies, beats and so on. Even without hardware (sure it more difficult sometimes). I know how it must sound but i can't make it sound like it have to because of lack of money... (roughly speaking) I don't even have midi keys now, but i'm optimist and wish you were too ;) |

hello prosect,
Dont think that if you will buy synths your sound will be better, what makes your sound better is the samples you use and the mix you do. like ppl said here, you need studio Monitors. only with some kinda studio monitors you will have good reference, and your sound will become better, you will see. After getting good monitors, sound card will be another important thing, after you have these two think about buying a studio, because studio will cost you much more than monitors. (and scard after it).
meanwhile just here quality products in your hifi and listen how mix should be... learn it. after youll know how it should be try to make your sound similar to the quality products you have. (just one point - dont imitate, learn!)
one small thing- i work with sb64 (creative) and alesis monitor1, with shitty amp and my trax sound good. so you need an ear not money!
cheers. mox |

note: i'm really not a pro in mastering. about it: ... after u think you're finished: 1) there's freq mastering - making EQ work (make sure that e.g. kik doesn't kill the bass etc.) - this u need to do with EQs. ants work. but it pays.
and there's level mastering - play with the faders, use compressors when needed to avoid distortion.
another thing: keep your ears sharp, don't expose them to heavy DB hits - it's irreversible!
it is very hard to work without Monitors, and console the best solution: card->console->amp->monitor (when u have many outputs)
but u can try: card->really good headset or skip the console.
i don't know if there's such thing like Crossover headset, but if there is, get it. and try listening to your music on different systems. (cd-player, car, home-stereo, try playing in big space.. open air party, when the soundman sets up the system, and try listening, ask the soundman the opinion on recording quality, they sometimes know :) )
anyway use the highest quality of samples: 16bit@48khz in your case.
hope this can help.

Hello Prosect,
Mastering usually applied to a finished track by a qualified sound engeneer ( when u study sound engeneering there is a special course for mastering ). Usually, if u finish a track, then u dont need the home pride EQ + other manipulations, and if u do then it should say something about the quality of the final mix that u have. The major idea behind mastering, as I see it is to take a bunch of traxx and make them as if they were made in the same day, same studio same person and same feel... + make'm bigger and fuller. Usually mastering studios have some 'Magic' ;-) box which cost several tens of thousands of grands that makes the 'Magic' for the track's width.. I am not a big fan of comp plugins to make mastering though I have to admit that ppl that know what they do can get good results even with simple EQ's and Comps.
Now that was about mastering.. About general mixing I am 100% behind Michael - He is a good example how to make things out of nothing.. Loads of listening, Working and trying to understand the Hertz, and couple of damn good EARS.
Nothing like a couple of good EARS.
Cheers |
