Yes, its an important factor in the release of any compilation or V.A
A sort of brush up in the quality of the cd.
From what i know, the popular 'master's ' are
Xenemorph and Deedrah.
Somebody who has an intricate knowledge of the software and production involved, usually somebody with major experience, like the two artists mentioned above.

you might get a better response to this in the equipment/creation section as the producers hang around there. initially I misunderstood mastering and equated it to mixing of tracks/
Karmacola's right.... to elaborate just a lil :
mastering is the final audio step
that comes just before manufacturing a CD... an dits a crucial step. once our artists genius have made a final copy of thier tracks they will send it off to someone to "master it". tis then shaped, sculpted, scooped, equalized, compressed, and finessed into sonic splendor.
Mastering is what gives depth, punch, clarity
and volume to music. It is part science, part craft, and part alchemy. . .
of what Iv heard, lot of the mastering work in southafrica is done by artifakt who is revered for his expertise.

one of the most important aspects in the sound world... there are sound engineers dedicated to the "art" of mastering.. its one of the toughest jobs to do ... compressing, eqing.. basically bringing the sound out of the woodwork..
there are studios built for just mastering.. huge, massive, expensive.. with the best monitors, amps, far fields, digital consoles.. though psy mastering labs are not as expensive or complicated..
wavelab is a good mastering software to use if any of u budding artists wanna do up ur track on ur home pc.. also remember mastering requires high quality monitors that dont colour ur sound at all or the least bit possible.. else at home use good headphones..
xenomorph is one of the better guys in the psy world to master..

I absolutly agree with you psykoaktiv!!...
A Mastering Ingeneer is very different than a classical sound ingeneer. He will give you the sound (or not) of your final product, that's why studios are composed by very expensive gear...
Mixing board are unusuals, composed with oscilloscopes and lot of stuff such very massive comporessors and very flat monitors (you right...)
Anyway, a good mastering ingeneer can't be "young", cause he need experience...
For my own part, Huby (Ultimae Records) is my favourite one...and one of the best !

There are a handful of people who master well in the scene... Simon Polinski and Yaniv Shulman to name a few more.
But if I had my druthers, I would use Kevin Metcalfe @
Soundmasters.

Also, it's a bit different to master a compilation than just one track. The reason why it's mastered is not just to make a track sound good, but also to make sure that all the tracks on the cd have more or less the same "sound" and fit well togheter.
