Clipping is fine until you hear distortion.

if you lower the master fader you will even lower the bitrate cubase will operate in i think..so for best resolution leave it like it is..

oh lol.. what quite of nonsene.

never touch your master fader. leave it at 0.00. always.

imagine your masterfader is the engine. the gallardo is your workspace. when you want to accelerate, you dont wanna limit yourself by using a 1.5L 100hp engine, dont u ? instead you want to have the maxiumum power available IF needed. the gas pedal (your track faders) controls the power. i hope you get it somehow lol

you simply cannot compare volume on voltage controlled amplifiers and volume ITB.

Suloo, so are you talking about bitrate or bitness?

Bitrate 24 bit etc..if you lower the master fader in your DAW you are lowering the rate it wont be 24bit anymore..thats what i mean..

because digital headroom != analog headroom.

ok, just lowered my master fader in c5.1 and ran the signal into an external analyzer. -60db in 24bit, that should be a reduction of maybe like 10 or 12 bits, if 24 = 144db. so afterwards everything was hearable, from 20hz to 20khz... ?

heard anyone about internal mixing? 32bit float is a standard today! so stop panic about bit depth or dynamic reduction in this case. lowering master gain dont make a crap from your music. is anyone can here differences? i dont think so. trust your ears not numbers people

yeah lowering the master is not really a issue..but mixing too hot is not the sweetsport for many of the tool i use and i guess for many of you too, hardware or software.. even for converters, gain staging can matter a lot .

there is no need to mix superloud and clip the master fader for using hard cliping also imo ,you can use a hard cliper, i would never mix super hot just cause i want some sound to clip, i would rather clip them with my a/d or some plugs or hardware or use a limiter depending the sounds.

only point i see to mix super hot , is to work with a mastering chain from the begining, this can help a lot or can totally destroy everyhting depending of the user experience

thats also the way many ME work.. they will do a first "trial" chain to get the loudness of the tune clean but at this stage it s not optimal yet and will be fine tuned later, then use processors according to how the loudness chain change the sound..so you can get better balance , cleaner and louder in the end and you can gain time

that make total sense to work with a chain on ur master to get a mix that can go loud with best balance and dynamic too ,even if it s not a must at all it can help...plenty of producer do it with great result just dont forget to remove it before sending to mastering

For me better result is also gained by setting kick @ -10dB. No need to touch master at all.           ProtoDrive https://soundcloud.com/protodrive
