as far as i see... you answer your self here.
if adding the rest of the elements to the mix cause clipping than you must short that out possibly some are too loud or have some frequency clashing.
if you want the best resolt dont be lazy and short the mix.. the easy way isnt the best one here!

i have 1 question, so i sent 1 of my tracks for mastering,, now the mix was at -10 db most of the track,, but close to the end, when the layering was thick, the level went up just a tad to -9.5 db , even tho i tried to find that peak, it was tough to find, anyway, now when the track has come back from mastering, it seems that the point at which the db levels peak in the track, is where the mastering has come out fullest, or full, complete, the best dynamics, images of the sound... the rest of the track even tho sound quite nice, seem to be lacking that fullness.. so my question is, if i tell the the mastering engg where exactly in the track the db levels peak, will he be able to adjust the mastering in such a way, that the complete track holds that fullness in sound, and not just the point where it peaks,? can the mastering engg fix it or do i need to fix the peak in the mix myself even tho its ever so slight of .5 , .6 db. when i heard my mastered mix, i actually got a very clear picture or image of my sound, which has lead me to lower the high end a little, boost the mid freq a little, and eq the bass end so its just a tad more fat,so before i send it back for final master, is there any other points i should keep in mind, and what kind of a dialog would you suggest between the mastering engg and the artist to enhance the quality of the output.

If the original is has the same fatness all over the track so should the master. Explain him your problem and let him master it again. If your unmastered original also has that problem it is yours to fix.
Just keep the conversation constructive and open.

i dont even see a problem there. you dont want a loud mix in the mixing stage. why bother? just lower all channels down, except the master, and make sure your track is peaking somewhere in -12 -3 dB range and its fine.
